Guys, need some help please.

My 9 speed X0 rear mech is knackered and I've decided to convert to 2x10 but need some guidance.

I'm going to buy the following:

M786 XT Long Cage Rear Mech
M770 10 speed XT shifters
11-36 XT Cassette
XT 10 Speed Chain
Gear cable.
New Chain Rings....

but have no idea what teeth combination to go for. All my riding is at trail centres around the UK. I'm pretty useless on the climb if thats any help :) Want to buy it tomorrow as I'm going to BPW this weekend.

How much is chain rings compared to the full thing? (forget the name)

Also would a medium cage not be better?

A full groupset on Merlin is £299. If I buy the parts I need it comes in at about £156, plus the 2 x chain rings.

I think a medium might be too short depending on what cassette and chain ring combo you go for?

medium will be fine if 2 x 10

Check out bike-discount.de for prices to compare.

Also just save yourself the hassle - go 1 x10!

simple, one shifter etc.

Not much you can't climb with say 34/32T front and 11-36 cassette.

I came into this thread to say the exact same as what booyaka has just said, go 1x10 with a 34/32T front ring and 11-36 cassette, you won't be left wanting.

Sorry I meant crankset, depending on the price of rings it may be only a few quid more.

But yes, go 1x10. :)

I'd probably go 38/26 or similar, as per the XT cranksets.

Give you a good range that way, or if your fitter 40/28.

But then a 28/26 will see any climb with 36 on the rear.

Chains are slightly thinner overall width to fit between the narrower space at the back but the inner plate dimensions are the same so they sit on the same chainrings.

Front mechs are narrower to suit the narrow chain.

i have 9 speed rear mech, 9 speed cassette, 10 speed 28/36 deore chainset and a 10 speed deore front mech running with a 10 speed chain. Works a treat to be honest.

Ok thats good then if the inner dimensions are the same, it should have no problems running on a 9 speed chainset.

Thanks guys. Placed my order on CRC. Had to get an Alivio 38T ring as that's all they had, but will replace it at some point if necessary.

Shimano SLX HG81 10 Speed MTB Cassette

SRAM PC1051 10 Speed Chain

Shimano XT M780 10 Speed Trigger Shifter
Black, Pair - Bar Mount

Shimano XT M785 Top Swing 2x10 Front Mech
28.6mm/31.8mm/34.9mm, Top Swing,

Shimano SLX M660 Inner Chainring
Black, 64mm, 26t

Shimano XT M786 Shadow+ 10 Speed Rear Mech
Silver, Medium Cage

Shimano Alivio M411 Middle Chainring
Silver, 104mm, 38t, 4 Bolt

Brand-X Outer Ring Bolts Narrow 7075 Alloy
Black, 5 Pack

What chainset do you have at the moment? Have you checked he PCD are all the same?

Shimano are 104mm for the middle/big and 64mm for the inner rings. Most common size so you should be fine but there are some funky 3 bolt chainsets out there now.
