Should e-cigarettes be banned from public places?

What, so everyone who drinks alcohol is addicted to it? People who go to pubs and bars are generally not alcoholics. Whereas most people [99% I would imagine] who smoke are addicted.

The vast majority of coffee drinkers are addicted to it. Do you have an issue with those people drinking coffee in public?

It's a shame that they didn't become common place before the smoking ban. It's been too long for many people to just accept that they are back (even though they aren't)

No, they shouldn't be banned just because some people see it as smoking. As for having to check if they are e-cigs or not, well there's no smell for a start. It would be like banning roll-ups in case there's not just tobacco in there.

It was on early this morning too. I think i'm right in saying that there was also some chap on from the BMA and he said one (or maybe the only, it was early!) big concern is that it 'glamourises' smoking.

Is that the biggest concern? - Really?, come on now...

I think they (anti-smoking brigade, tobacco/pharmaceutical companies and such) are desperately trying to find something negative to say about them, though at the moment this is all they have.

I can see the government trying to find a way to tax it beyond VAT. They have used the health reason for decades on smoking and now it's being replaced by something safe. I don't know the figures but I'd say I see about 1 vaper to every 2 smokers these days so about a third. That's some tax loss.

Will be the same once electric cars start to become the norm. Taxing on emissions won't really work.

I've never really understood this, but are they dangerous? (aside from getting you addicted to nicotine, which could lead you to smoking)

If they're safe, then I don't see why they should be banned.

I heard today, that the big tobacco companies are lobbying the government to impose strict regulations on e-cigs, as it would force the small e-cig companies out of business. Could this be a side-effect?

Too bloody right. They are the only ones who could afford to pay for medical classification of their products (even though the MHRA have categorically stated that they don't see ecigs as a medical device). So it effectively kills the existing market (maybe one or two existing companies could survive, but barely) and leaves it open for the tobacco giants to set up their brand new stalls, extorting users and destroying the market.

I think we should ban drinking grape juice in public because it could lead to people drinking wine and wine can be bad for your health so there.

I really think you need to find a better way to occupy your time. People display their addictions all the time, and the e-cigs do not result in passive smoking, so who cares. It's better than smoking real fags, surely!

My girlfriends mother uses one, and she is glued to the thing. Smoking it the other night in a restaurant, always got her hand around it. I think they should be at least discouraged from use indoors. I think its kind of rude in a way, and very depressing to see her having to hold it all the time.

I don't get where these people are coming from. From where is all this negative media being driven?

I think most normal people accept the benefits of ecigs, and the only real rub seems to be that the anti-socialisation of smoking has been so effective that ecigs have been caught up in it... which is stupid. I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories, but seeing the heavy opposition to vaping, with no real logical arguments againts it, it feels like there must be some malign force at work.

Better than having to watch her light up all the time though surely?

So what are your thoughts? Obviously e-cigarettes harm the health of no-one, but they could lead other people to smoking regular cigarettes and people flouting the rules in other public places, as well as encouraging others to take on unnecessary addictions.

OH NO! HOLY CRAP - we should probably ban people from eating fast food or drinking in public too. I've often felt the need to scarf down a cheeseburger when I see somebody in a McDonalds chowing down on a Big Mac or chugging a beer outside a pub. That means that those people doing those things are potentially encouraging me to make life choices which are not necessarily the best for my health!

Are we really that ****ing retarded that we can't make our own decisions and have to be legislated at because we cannot be trusted to make the right decisions?

Junkies need their fix, just this one is legal. I think they need to ban normal cigarettes in all public places first indoors and out, disgusts me in the street walking past a smoker puffing out all that junk into the air around me

I wouldn't vape in a restaurant to be fair. I think there is a certain etiquette to it. You don't vape in front of clients, in meetings, or where people are eating. It's just common sense. If you wouldn't fart there, don't vape there.

Totally agree. Like any addiction it can come across as rather pathetic if it's always there. It's like a child holding a blanket all the time or sucking its thumb.

Fair enough. Agreed on all counts.

This is what a vaporizer looks like... Does this really look like a cig. How will this bloody glamorise smoking..
