1984 here we come

Didn't they promise a referendum on the EU before they got elected?

They didn't get elected. A subtle point everyone seems to miss when constantly whinging about the government on the internet.

Plus how is this like 1984? They've deleted a bunch of stuff from their website and changed the robots.txt file. It's hardly George Orwell stuff is it?

I think it was a fairly uneccesary thing to do but its hardly some sort of abuse of power conspiracy.

You've missed a brilliantly executed joke there old bean :D

Thread titles like these make me wonder how many people have actually read Orwell's book and how many just think 1984 is a catch all statement for "government doing something I don't like".

It's one of my favourite books and of course Winston works at the ministry of truth whose sole job is to go back an alter records and erase people / events from all publications so 'the party' is never shown to have uttered anything but correct statements.

Seemed pretty relevant to the article for me.

But now the element of doubt's been introduced. Yes. Yes I have read 1984. Numerous times.

So because, they got in on a split it doesn't require them to keep up their part if they do get in in?

Or are you stating that the limp dems are stopping them?

Does the waybackmachine still work?

Archive.org obey the contents of robots.txt and requests to remove pages from the archives. Since they aren't the copyright holders of the content in question they have no other choice but to comply.

Not entirely sure a political party deleting web content is really comparable to widescale political revisionism by a totalitarian government. But if you are convinced it is yet another step towards our dystopic future on Airstrip One I doubt I can change your mind.

it's the first step though isn't it ? I mean those kind of changes wouldn't just be brought in would they ?

Not really, it is a political party re-branding and reorganising their website. It isn't the government rewriting historical record.

Am 'complicit with the totalitarian state because I deleted a bunch of news posts from a club website earlier this year? It isn't like they made a concerted effort to erase all speeches from the internet. Just deleted their archive and changed robots.txt. It's hardly techno-wizardry!

Agree,

also since they clearly prefer that the masses only pay attention to their newest and shiniest policies it seems in line with the thinking behind Newspeak, to simplify the message.

There is nothing in this move that is for the benefit of anyone interested in politics. I really don't understand those who appear to think this is nothing more significant than saving hard drive space.

and didn't John Major recently speak out stating that many people in positions of political power were old boy Etonion public school sorts these days ?

Seems like inner party / outer party type set up.

Conservative's website, they can do what they want really. If the Conservatives went out of power and then disbanded the website would be completely deleted. If this was number10 deleting stuff then I'd be concerned.

It'll be room 101 soon. Mark my words.
We have usage of US government offshore "interrogation facilities" and secret detention centers.

I mean lets be fair terrorists might as well be called thought criminals because even having radical views can make you a terrorist, just look at Snowden.

We've been heading toward 1984 for years, state controlled media, research "proving" the policy instead of the research informing the policy, it really is time for a change, we're getting nailed to the wall.

Governments are excellent at slowly orchestrating change, slowly so it's unnoticeable except in hindsight.

I took a quick look at the Labour Party website. No archive of speeches seems to be there. There is an "old news" section. I went to the oldest pages and got this error
