What's space GPS? :p

Phones don't use that specific term anymore, its just 'location services' these days. (Lots of sensors and networks working together)

You can get an actual GPS lock in doors. It's in the video I posted, or install 'GPS Status and Toolbox', it gives info on number of GPS satellites you have locked. Some devices will lock 10 or more from within my bedroom.

Looks like a 4.4 compatibility issue with the GPS app to me, how fast does Google maps take for a lock in the same location?

I've tried my phone and its much faster than yours is in that video, its about 12 seconds sitting in my living room, yep I did a reset and restarted the app afterwards.

There is an app called GPS test which I just used and it got a lock on 3 satellites straight away and a maximum of 6 after some time.

My Nexus 7 v2 got a slightly faster lock straight away and onto 9 satellites after some time.

The nexus 5 was more accurate though because of cell towers being used as well as wifi whereas Nexus 7 only had wifi.

Overall imo the GPS is working perfectly fine and fast.

Seriously considering this handset. But worried by how bad reviews make out the battery.

I have enough battery issues with my GS2. At idle it runs down at around 10% an hour!

The idle battery is incredible on the Nexus 5, I'm on 89% after 17 hours unplugged at 30 minutes screen on time. this is on the Three network too where the lower power Edge/GPRS connections are not possible.

It's only really the screen on time that lets it down slightly for me.

Phones use cell towers, wifi and GPS for location.

I think there is a setting to turn off the fact that they can use cell towers usually called A-GPS sometimes.

If you have wifi turned off then it may ask for you to turn it on to help etc.

Same if you turn GPS off.

It's best to just leave all three on 24/7 if you use sat nav though as they only use power when you use the application

Not quite true Psycho. 4.4 uses WiFi constantly (even when WiFi is off) if you allow it in location services for Google Now, and I get a lot of power savings with it disabled.

The problem isn't wifi there its Google now and the way they have designed and integrated it.

You could probably set up a automatic task which disables wifi 100‰ when you leave home or your work, etc and then turn back on when near them.

Or just disable Google now.

You can understand why they have done it but there should be an option to disable it in Google now rather than disabling it altogether.

Wifi is also useless for location tracking when your nowhere so disabling it would make little difference as you still have the other 2 to rely on.

GPS and cell towers are better anyway for positioning.

How do you mean by 'nowhere'? I'm not sure that's possible. I think you're always somewhere. If that somewhere has WiFi, it's generally more accurate for location services than cell tower triangulation.

Guys.

Is this the default launcher on the Nx5? As in weather wigdet and system usage bar come as standard?

+1, You can never be nowhere, Wifi is more accurate than cell towers, cell towers cover a radius of app 5-10 miles, compared to an average wifi connection which has a much smaller radius.

Obviously you need to be in a wifi zone to use that accuracy.

Whats the quickest and easiest way to ROOT and UNLOCK BOOTLOADER and install TWPR?

say your driving down the motorway or a country road

is wifi useful in this scenario? no

when is wifi useful, when you actually connected to one. i know google have saved like a billion hotspots around the country and use these to determine location sometimes, but people change their internet so regularly, people moving homes, etc, etc, it's probably the least useful way of doing things.

unless of course you are connected to a wi fi and not just scanning them then it becomes useful as it simply uses the wifi to determine exactly where you are.

therefore when your out and about the most useful is GPS and Cell Towers, using a combination of these two you can get a far better accurate reading.

the proof of this is when using the GPS test app on a tablet with no mobile data / wifi only and a phone.

i used my nexus 5 and my nexus 7, the nexus 7 connected to more sats yet however the nexus 5 reading was more accurate.

why is this? because the nexus 5 was also using cell towers to triangulate the location.

therefore wifi imo is the least useful in most cases as when your using sat nav your most likely going to be in a car and on a road where there is no wifi.

which is why it's useless 99% of the time your using sat nav your in your car not your home.

Not really, For some reason you assume that Navigation is only used in a car on a motorway. In a city for example when someone is using navigation by foot it is very useful for accuracy. of-course its not the most useful of the lot nor is it useless as you suggest. Its relative to the scenario.

when is wifi useful, when you actually connected to one.

This statement is incorrect, do some basic research about wifi location broadcast etc. Location can be determined regardless of someone being connected to it. So it is very useful (at least for me) when navigating by foot.
