Hello, i will be finally building my pc this week but i cannot decide whether to buy windows 7 or windows 8.1, i really hated windows 8 due to the difficulty of using it (took me 15 minutes to figure out how to shut down :D). But apparently windows 8.1 has some features which make life a little easier, What would you go with ?

Thanks in advanced

I have windows 8.1 tweaked to death to make it more like windows 7.

8/8.1 has its advantages such as slightly faster file transfer, quicker start up/shut down and DX11.1 but other than that..i still think windows 7 is better on a standard desktop system.

I say go with a pre-owned copy of Windows 7 retail from the MM...should save you a few bob too rather than just buying windows 8 new.

As your going all new might aswell get 8.1 so your on the latest and greatest so to speak.

agreed.

although i didn't get to use 8 RTM, i did try the consumer preview and i wasn't a fan. 8.1 has some nice improvements like:

-shutting down by right clicking the start button.
-the ability to turn off the app switcher/charms bar in the top left/right
-the start screen only shows applications you pin rather than showing every single shortcut generated by an installer.

i also immediately uninstalled all modern UI apps and didn't waste a single moment of my time with them.

for people with windows 7 already, i don't think there is any compelling reason to upgrade. i'm sure others would disagree. i just think you really have to want to rather than asking other people. but when you're in a position where you have to pick one or the other, you might as go for the new stuff.

Surely uninstalling the Modern UI apps is a waste of time? You're spending time doing something that's not necessary if you don't use them.

spending time? it takes a matter of seconds to right click a whole bunch at once and then hit the uninstall button. typing out this post was more effort.

A few seconds is still more than a single moment. The point really is, I don't get why people are so bothered about the new UI that they HAVE to uninstall the applications associated with it. The amount of space they take up is too small to make use of, and uninstalling them takes more effort than just leaving them be and getting on with using your PC.

you're not wrong. but if i want advice about what to do on my own pc, i'll ask for it.

Where was I giving advice? I was commenting on your claim that you hadn't wasted a single moment on Modern UI, yet wasted time unnecessarily uninstalling the applications. How is that advice?

and didn't waste a single moment of my time with them.

looking at my post again, you might have me on a technicality. if had used the word using instead of with, perhaps it would have been clearer. i still maintain that my time spent uninstalling them was not wasted.

anyway, more than enough time has been wasted here. you win. :p

I tend to uninstall the apps that Windows auto-defaults for certain file types.

As for benefits of Windows 8.1 for someone who is contemplating whether to buy it instead of 7 on top of what has already been mentioned:

Better resource management - more efficient.
Superior Display Driver Model versions - something some people will end up kicking themselves over should they encounter limitations of Win7 due to this.

Whether deliberate or not, Microsoft is clearly adding better enhancements to their Win 8.x operating systems.

Hi,
I went from Win 7 hp to Win 8 pro and think it’s a nice overall improvement. I don’t get the big deal about the start button as I never used it much. I also don’t use the start screen much so am glad 8.1 can now boot directly to the desktop. I would get Win 8.1 Pro.

I bought Windows 8 when I got a Lumia 1020 which is a Windows phone and with Xbox One coming, thought it would be nice to tie them all in together.

Honestly, I wish I'd stuck with Win7 Ultimate. I simply can't be arsed to back up and move 600GB of stuff to do a fresh install. Otherwise I would!

My computer is my workhorse and while I don't notice Windows 8 day to day in terms of stupid start screen etc, the annoyance of the media player does grate. Only benefit is being able to pay £8 a month, or something similar, to be able to stream any and all music that's in the catalog. I don't think I've listed to any of my thousands of tracks in weeks.

You are literally the only person I know who doesn't miss the Start button/menu.

Why would anyone buy a more expensive and older os. That wouldn't make any sense, i doubt even buying win7 from mm would be a good choice from a monetary pov.

Remember win8 oem is the retail version. Making it outstanding value.

Many of us don't miss it.
