Can you tell the time?

My Son's got a 'Time' poster on his wall which teaches time the Analogue way!

A couple of years ago I'd been sent over to the U.S for some training with my previous job and spent a good half hour explaining to a group of colleagues that 'half-two' meant 2:30 and not 1 ...

Bring back rationing and polio, the good old days.[/QUOTE]

Blimey there is someone as old as me on here. -

Fortunately I missed getting Polio.

Is that Essex lad winding everyone up or is he that clever.:eek:

Some people are just dumb.

In halls at uni, one girl had the revelation that the numbers on an analogue clock progress in order, and correspond to the time. Before that staggering moment, she had simply memorised the meanings of the various positions.
We never let her get over it.

wow....

I had an young apprentice (just out of school) join our organisation last year and he did not know about the 24hour clock.... ala 18:30 or 05:00. I remember saying to him on a job we was on (his first trip) we had finished work and I said to him we will meet up at 19:30 and make our way to the event we was attending. He said when is that ? thinking he maybe he didn't hear me I said 19:30. He then said he didn't know what that meant.... I said 7:30 he then asked why I said 19:30 and not 7:30. I sighed and left it at that.

Next day I made him sit on a workstation and forced him to learn the 24 hour clock. Believe it or not in the organisation I am in 24 hour clock is used A LOT ! and not knowing it is simply not acceptable.

My sister is the same, well was until recently anyway. She's just turned 23, but only started understanding the 24 hour clock in the past 6 months. I used to always tell her the time in 24 hour format, and she'd respond with something like "Tell the time properly like a normal person, not stupid Army time..".

That's fair enough, but if you do, then you don't have much right to laugh at others for struggling with other basic stuff though, right?

Especially on the interwebs where you have a spell checker right at your fingertips.

I admit it, i was watching 'im a celebritity' last night (an ironicly titled show in my opinion). I watched to my digust/delight how Joey 'essex' struggled to read a analogue watch.

..but i was more shocked by my mums admission that my sister still can't read an analogue watch. She's 21...

I was Speechless.

One of our lands great landmarks is a gaint clock (Big Ben), its pretty sad to hear some people can't read it.

Is this more common than i think?

It's a man named Joey, and he's from Essex. So not a shock, also, probably just a way to keep talking to a hot blonde, so maybe he's got game

No really surprised as we have a nation of thickos who can’t do simple arithmetic without a calculator, are unable to spell, use simple grammar and can’t even speak properly. Parents don’t teach them and the teaching in schools isn’t up to standard so it is to be expected.
it's always the ones who whine the most that fail the most.

no really surprised here either!

I think this is absolutely ridiculous. You are not THAT busy in school that you couldn't fit a simple concept of understanding analog clocks in your head. Hell, if they think it takes too long to teach to a kid, then teach it to people when they are 15..

I wonder what other basic skills people are lacking. How to tie their shoelaces?

(Before all the grammar comments continue, I write more liberally in the internet than on official places.)

Depends on several Factors:

Do I have my watch or a watch like device with the correct time

How wasted I am at the time

How confused I am at the time

How awake I am at the time

If I have a watch or watchlike device with the correct time and am any or all of the above it's quite simple.

If I don't have my watch or watchlike device with the correct time and am none of the above I'm still pretty good at predicting the time.

If I don't have my watch and am any of the above it then becomes a question of asking the closest person!

If the time read 17:40 / 5:40 on a digital clock would you say that as "It's twenty to six" or would you say "It's five forty"

Automatically the analogue side of me would come out and I'd say twenty to six.
