what is a SSHD?
A Solid State Hard Drive hybrid. It's a normal HDD with a very small SSD used as a cache for the commonly read data.

That's like saying that books are bargains nowadays compared to when there was no such thing as a printing press. It doesn't mean that artificially inflating the prices is a good idea.
That's a different subject. My point still stands. Gaming is cheaper now than it was in the past, at least when you compare console gaming from the 90s.

You're right.
But I have no idea why that point is relevant. I've not paid more than £40 for a game since I owned an N64 (apart from Donkey Konga, but that came with bongos!), and have no intention of starting to do so now.
Assuming N64 and SNES games could be had for £40, which they largely could not, don't you think inflation over the last 20 years should have made them significantly more than £40?
This year has gone so fast, I can't believe were almost at launch. This last week and a half is going to be a killer.
Anyone have an idea of the expected availabilty of the PS4 for those that have not pre-ordered for Christmas?
Bet you will be able to walk into anywhere and get one. Sony have nailed this.
No. I think that decreased cost of production, and gaming's move from being niche to being a commodity, should have brought prices down, as was seen with the PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, Wii, and Gamecube, and has been seen in all other forms of media, with the arguable exception of book publishing (in hard format, not ebooks) which has had to maintain high prices due to a stagnant system of distribution.
I think that companies bumping prices early in a console's life are justified in doing so to earn money from early adopters, which is why my question was "do you think that prices will remain high", not "why are prices currently high?"
This might sound dumb but are all the high street shops going to be stocking consoles in store after the release date? I understand people who want to pre order it to guarantee it on the dayof release etc, but is there not consoles allocated to shops so you can just go in and buy one? or will we not see them in shops until next year?
