Are you bothered about seeing decent spelling and grammar on a forum?

I don't think it's important providing the correct message is put forward and everyone can understand what's written.

My grammar nor spelling isn't that great but I try my best at all times. I have improved over the years but sometimes I try typing as fast as I think which obviously produces some interesting results.

Grammar isn't as black and white as what some people think. We all have different abilities and I don't like seeing people bully others. As Hyburnate says, helping others is far more productive.

As far as I was concerned it was like someone going wrong saying, "apples are blue". You wouldn't let that go, so why let a spelling mistake go?

This is how I see it as well - if someone made a post full of BS and rubbish, the majority of posters will pull them up on it, so what's the difference?

Perhaps when people do point it out they could do it in a nice way :p like this:

I say Huddy old chap, you appear to have mistakenly inserted a superfluous "what" within your posting which I have highlighted in bold and underlined type above... Easy mistake to make so think nothing of it, but also I agree with your points about bullying

See... corrected nicely and in a gentlemanly fashion whilst also not appearing to just completely disregard the content of the post

wtf is wrong with you, you missed out a full stop. Are you an idiot or something?

This post is not serious.

In the real world or work, other people will use your spelling mistakes and grammatical errors against you so personally I don't mind being corrected on online forums. Better here than in front of the customer.

This is a slightly twisted view of things.
I think your be hard pressed to find anyone that gives two ***** about errors in the modern work place. everyone is so stressed and running to deadlines that it becomes irrelevant.

If you are writing to clients it looks like you're incompetent.

I am not perfect and therefore do not expect other people to be. I am well aware that neither my spelling or punctuation is perfect on a good day, nevermind a day where I make typo's. Most of my mistakes happen due to typing on my phone however where I notice a mistake I do edit my post to correct them.

While I can forgive mistakes in spelling or punctuation I do find it annoying where people use the wrong word. The one that annoys me most (which doesn't really occur on the forum) is 'Can you borrow me...' it isn't simply a mistake it is simply wrong. Where people are wrong they should be corrected, this is how we learn. We attempt something based upon our existing knowledge and where wrong it is corrected, this allows us to know the correct answer / word and from then on it should be used.

Obviously where I know a member of the forum has something wrong, such as dyslexia, then I can happily forgive their mistakes. Though of the top of my head I can only think of two posters who fall into this catergory.

It annoys me when people post JUST to comment on different post grammar and spelling rather what the post was trying to say.

I think some people just ego boost out of correcting people.

At a general level I agree with this, unless the post is so unreadable that a person is actually trying to guess what was said. Posting simply to correct grammer or spelling is pointless. If you can understand the post enough to correct the spelling and / or grammer you understand it enough post an actual response.

Hunting for the odd missing apostrophe or misplaced letter online is a pastime for sad people who should be looking at their own inadequacies rather than pointing the silly mistakes of others. :p

Spelling, grammar & punctuation errors don't bother me much. I'm no good at it myself and I find many of the rules to be pretty arbitrary. Using the wrong words does bother me sometimes. Different words mean different things. Having to mentally replace the words that have been written with the words the author meant can be irritating.

I am bothered about the standard of spelling and grammar in the posts I read but it's not something that concerns me to the exclusion of everything else. If the post is broadly legible and is coherent then that's great, the rest can be worked on while if it's grammatically perfect but is logically flawed then I'd see that as more of an issue.

Generally I'll only offer a correction if one of the following conditions applies - the mistake is distracting, it's one I've noticed them make on a few occasions, they're trying to be pedantic and pick up on someone elses mistake or if I'm aware that they'd prefer the mistake pointed out so they can improve. In other situations I'd tend to just leave it alone because it's possible for any of us to make mistakes and I know that my own usage of language leaves a lot to be desired at times.

Just for reference I went to a pretty rough school in Glasgow, and grew up with a Dutch speaking parent, so really it looks like you're just using your school as an escapegoat ;) (yes I know)
