Console sales predictions. Over 5 years, PS4, Xbone, Wii U.

The Wii says hi.

The Wii was successful because it was loved by the casual market, they didn't care about the Nintendo franchises.

Wii was powered by hype and casual party games. The majority of the audience the Wii attracted likely moved into tablet/smart phone gaming. A small few would have moved Xbox /Playstation and a tiny few would have stayed Nintendo.

The Wii was a fluke, the Wii U is continuing the trend of Nintendo consoles sales before the Wii (a steady decline)

When the Wii U stops getting XO/PS4 ports the console will be essentially dead with only Nintendo keeping it on life support. Lots of Nintendo fanboys will come in saying I'm wrong.

Hype sold the Wii (with it's new control method), I'd like to see the numbers of those Wii's sold that are still in use. The fact the Wii U has bombed massively shows you people have moved on.

Not strictly true, if numbers of Wii U hardware sold climb then devs will start developing for the console again.

There's no doubt hype played a part in the Wii but also it's appeal was wider. The fact the Wii U has bombed is more due to a complete fart up in the Ninty marketing team. I would wager many people still don't realise it's a brand new console rather than a Wii revision/update.

the fact stuff like Wii Party U sold horribly means they probably aren't coming back to Nintendo.

Um...

Once the big games come out, Wii U will start to rocket off shelves, just like the 3DS, it had the same doom and gloom predictions, yet turned it around. This happens with every Nintendo console..

By Xmas 2014 we'll have a good idea how well the Wii U will perform in it's lifetime. It's to early to say its dead, it's only just starting to shine now. The big games are yet to come...

You keep telling yourself that.

You seriously think in 3-4 years time when XO/PS4 games are mature devs are going to be able to release those games in the state they would be happy with on the Wii U?

The only thing to keep the interest in the Wii U from Nintendo fans will be the Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Donkey Kong stuff.

Gamers of the new generation who have no affinity with Nintendo from the NES/SNES days will not care for this franchises and will want to play GTA V/CoD/FIFA/BF4.

The big games are yet to come...

They've left it too late.

You think 80,000 sales of a game with an installed user base of over a million is good? Not to mention sales reduced by 28k consoles only one week later, it was a spike, not a consistent sales improvement.

You said it sold horribly, in fact it boosted consoles sales by a vast amount..

That's not even what I would call a system selling game.. Wait until Mario 3D World drops... Then Mario Kart... Then Donkey Kong.. Then Smash Bro's... Then Bayonetta.... Then Zelda... Then the new Nintendo IP and so on.... Plenty of life in the Wii U yet. It's only just getting started.

The sales were boosted to 38k, they then fell down to 17k only a week later, spike boosts are useless, they need consistently better sales, not a boost every time a new game comes out then horrible sales the rest of the time.

If Party U can do that to sales, just wait and see what Mario 3D World achieves, with each big title released momentum will be built.. Wii U sales are only going to go upwards..

My predictions are that Nintendo continue to sell well enough to people that like Nintendo games, but the casual crowd move to some iDevice / Apple TV combo.

The Xbone will continue to do well in it's core NA / UK markets but the PS4 has done enough to be a more serious challenger here than in the previous generation. Mainland Europe will be more Sony centric than the last generation. Japan is Nintendoland, but they are moving heavily towards mobile/handheld. The rest of the world game on PC.

Xbox One: 30-35 million is the most the Anglosphere can support.
Playstation 4: 60-70 million - that will mostly driven by dominance in mainland Europe plus some Asian sales.
Wii U: 10-20 million
Apple: ??? 80-100 million - filthy casuals
PC: ? a lot

PC? That's not a next gen console and it annoys me that people insist on making out it is one.

Why? It has the same internals basically as an Xbox & PS4, the same games, plugs into a TV and a lot of countries do all of their gaming on it. It's not a great deal different than an Android set top box.

Console = fixed spec machine, all identical, has one purpose mostly.

Hey, at least Wii U outputs at 1080p 60fps. ;)

According to Wikipedia it has shipped 3.91million units.

PS4 will be the biggest seller in the end with over 50m after 5 years.

Humor me. I've put numbers down for how I see the devices produced by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft will sell. What makes them a distinct category?
