Property security - anyone?

having been burgled into and for me to spend thousands on buying things so I can "make do" with things to continue working etc.... I have, after 3-4 weeks, no choice but to move back into my rented accommodation. Long story.

I asked the landlord to change the locks... she will but I will have to pay. Fair enough, don't have time to argue.
I also said I want security put in place like alarms etc... - fine, obviously I have to pay for that.

I want an IP Camera indoors and possibly one outside. One way or another I need a camera outside but was wondering if anyone has any good ideas on who to go for, what to get, how to set it up or even companies they have used to get this up and running pronto.

I want to be able to view my property from wherever I am in the world hence the IP camera but also want to record activity and be able to view it afterwards incase of anything happening.

also need advice in terms of where to store such recording units.

please - anyone? I appreciate everything and want to get this done "now".

Its also worth reviewing external security though it might not help - but typically burglars like a combination of easy to get in and out but also at the same time cover like high fences that shield them from view, things like proper side gates, illuminated doorways, etc. can help to deter them.

Illuminate the door. Get a lamp on Auto timer that comes on when you're out. CCTV camera is ok, depending on how your layout is of where you live. Have one outside/ and inside straight opposite the door. Get colour cameras if you do.

Or just buy a big dog.

thanks vita - appreciate it. keep it coming please.

anyone have any specific ideas or equipment they use/recommend or even companies they have used?

I have an army of these covering my buisness address.

Foscam FI8904W and FI8905w for the larger areas at night.

Set up to alert my phone if motion is detected. Can also view from almost any web browser.

Even a dummy cam can put of a lot of the sods.

How are they breaking in?
What kind of area do you live in?
What's the security like there already?
How many windows and doors do you have? What are they made from/what style are they?

Jumping straight to "I NEED AN IP CAMERA GUYS" seems a bit knee jerk unless you've already considered the factors surrounding the break in.

Main idea with security is you want it to be as hard as possible for someone to enter your property. Yet, you don't want it to be to overwhelming where if someone wanted to target a place, they'd look at yours and think hmm, wonder what he is hiding in there.

Like I said, illuminate the door, so a auto security light/similar to flood light when someone goes near your door. Get good locks, go to a locksmith and find out what are the best locks for your door then shop around.

Auto lights again like I mentioned. Set them so you have one light on each side of the property at different times. This makes it seem that you are entering rooms/and someone is in the house.

Does your house have any window locks? Is it a flat with a separate entrance? Ground floor/first floor?

I would recommend a door grille, but you'd probably pay over the odds for it, and if you're not going to stay there permanent then their is no point.

Look on ebay for some i.p cams, all you need is something that you can view, which the majority now can through i.p. Connect it to your computer and they should record straight onto the HDD. If your house has internal locks in the door, lock them at night. So for example, living room, kitchen etc. I haven't ever looked for this, but I'm sure you can get small motion sensors with alarms, you could place some by your windows incase an intruder came in through them. Only problem with that is, a spider/fly could set them off, depending how sensitive they are.

The only problem with locking doors is, incase of an fire, you'd need clear exit towards the nearest exit. Depending where your bedroom is (Flat/ground floor house), it could be dangerous

EDIT: It seems you can get motion sensors off the bay too. They look pretty cheap, but may be of crap quality.

what maybe a knee-jerk reaction to you may not be for the victim.

I know what I want, its just knowing where to get it and how to put it in and make it work.

seriously - thats all i need to know.

I think vita has it spot on there. You really want to look into prevention securing doors and windows. An ip camera is great but its not the best deterant and could be easily defeated with a head cover. Really more for showing what happened than actually preventing it. I imagine most criminals would laugh them off.

How did they get in?

I honestly dont know. no sign of break in. no broken windows. nothing.
there are 2 doors.

1 main door to get into the property then a door on the bottom floor to get into my property and a door to get upstairs into that property. its a house but split into 2.

I have issues with upstairs for over a year... she brings round random guys and has it on whilst I pay for her benefits from the government
most likely it was a bad one night stand and he came in and did something. she must have left the door open as I was away for that 1 weekend when it happened.

contents insurance - no go. dont get me started on that. contents dont cover the criminal or anything to catch them

I NEED cameras/alarms.

Isn't there a lock on your property?

If you've had issues with upstairs, there wasnt a sign of break in must have been someone who knew you were away and could do with the money.... I think I cracked it mate!

er... the doors are always locked.
you are not understanding this at all even though i explained. i dont get why a simple request turns into a spanish inquisition.... dont you think I have done all this/know what happened since after all, it happened to me?

nevermind.

answers to 2 different questions.

guys, either help in the way its requested... or dont. its simple.
i come here in good faith, i expect the same

If there's no sign of break in its got to be a so called inside job.

Door locks need replacing and you need to consider better locks. Not like for like just incase they were picked. Consider multiple bolts.

Look at an camera preferably a brightly coloured one sat by your door watching the passage to it. You might have issues with placing on outside the property due to the neighbour upstairs.

I honestly suspect the upstairs neighbour from what you provided.

For the record there has been help provided but if we can't work out what went wrong in order to allow them access we can't give advise to prevent it.
