Army/Raf and medical conditions

What? I somehow doubt you'd join a society for racial equality; I wouldn't join a war organisation.

It is now sadly, all government depts are getting hit the same. The Prison Service model is now to get young people 18-25 in the door and out again within 5-8 years. The higher salary and experience earners get the chance to go for voluntary redundancy around 4 times per year.

That's a shame. I find it terribly sad that there appears to be no focus on rehabiliation, and I expect this doesn't help.

Ulcerative Colitis RAF Med Board

Ulcerative Colitis will stop you joining any branch of any of the forces I'm afraid. It's a service no go.

I was medically discharged from the RAF for it two years a go.

Sorry to hear you got Medically Discharged, however I think Im following the same path. I got diagnosed last year with Ulcerative Colitis but have had no problems since, however I have just received my notice to attend Medical Board in less than 3 weeks times. Little nervous to say the least I have completed just over 12 years service out of a 22 year contract with the RAF. Any help / informantion would be appreciated. Thanks

Army and RAF are different. RAF is where people who get rejected for the Army and Navy go...

RAF basic training is much easier. The selection process is easier to pass etc

In short..RAF is for ladies and failures.

Or if you prefer being trained to a much higher level and getting paid more.

But then I'll stick to getting paid more and being called a lady than being a pongo any day ;)

Welcome to OCUK.....

I would expect to be MED discharged as you cannot be deployed and meet the operational requirements of the forces. I was in quite a bad way when I was discharged with it being badly flared so I had a year waiting on medical decisions and tests before being discharged on my final board. A lot may depend on your trade and also how long you have left on your contract. I presume if you are signed for 22 you are a CPL ? I would doubt they would let you serve another 10 years on a reduced med cat which also stops you being promoted.

To be fair I received the same pension amount as if I had done my 22 years as a CPL with a slightly reduced final payment as I had done 16 years service. My pensions are also tax free which is nice.

The MED boards are fine and the people are really nice so I would not worry too much. They will explain everything and help you however they can. I only had 2 boards a prelim and then my final discharge board. Some people have a lot more.

The problem with colitis is it gives you a permanently reduced med cat. Have you been diagnosed fully i.e camera and specialist report etc. I had to go and have another lot of tests to confirm before they permanently downgraded me and started the discharge process.

Anything else ask away I will help how I can ?

Cheers

Moogleys,
Many Thanks for the welcome and the info, to answer your questions yes i am a Cpl, at the end of last year i asked for a second opinion and they sent me to another specialist who had me in and checked with camera and provided specialist reports etc, which confirmed what the first specialist had said. I have been advised that they will make a decision on the day as if I will be staying or going.
The pension you mentioned was it a medical pension or was it a percentage of you forcasted pension? i know we dont want to go in to much detail on hear, as you already know, nobody will tell me anything till after the med board. Thanks again

If you set up your trust mate you will be able to email me and I can give you all the details.

If you have U/C confirmed by a specialist then it's unlikely they will keep you in. I was pretty much told I would be Med Discharged from the start. But a lot depends on your job I suppose. It's as everything on an individual basis.
