RIP Paul Walker

Pretty ******. He was a very generous guy, donated millions to charity, it's even worse that he was the passenger and his mate was probably driving like an idiot as you can see burnout marks on the road like donuts.

It wasn't very far from the charity venue they were at so I suspect his mate just took him out in a new car for a quick drive or similar :(

The driver seems to be at fault, given what we know at this early stage.

This is not an excuse to proclaim he got what he deserved though.

I've done some dumb things in cars overs the years, mainly in my youth, which could have got myself and others killed, but I was lucky. I came through that bravado, I'm more grounded now. I wouldn't take those risks anymore.

Sadly in this case, Paul Walker's friend took it a little too far and paid with both their lives.

It's tragic and sad. Personally, I don't feel like playing the blame game. We are not in a position to judge right now.

After such a rubbish day this news nearly made me cry. I have no idea why, it's just upsetting.

The driver was a professional racer according to Jalopnik. RIP to both of these men. Life is too fragile :(

shame yet another example of YouTube culture where capturing a ****ing video is more important than trying to help someone who may have still been alive.

The car was engulfed in flames, you expect someone who's untrained to run in, with the slim chance he wasn't dead on impact, and possibly die themselves in the process? I'd love to see how you would actually react if you were in a situation like that, but you know, it's the Internet so it's all good sitting behind your pc monitor taking the moral high ground.

How fast do you have to crash a brand spanking new porka to make it burst into flames? Are these things not ment to be uber safe considering the speeds they are designed to achieve?
I blames zeee Germans! Kill them all! From orbit! With a nuke!

Based on what I read elsewhere that specific model seems to have a bit of a repuation for coming apart even in relatively low speed crashes.

I've read a number of reports saying people were held back by authorities, including the drivers 8 year old son, because they kept trying to save them while the car was ablaze. Only so much people can do to help before they put themselves and others at risk.

R.I.P. and condolences to both families.

They stopped making them 6 years ago

It's a full carbon tub which sounds great but they offer very little in terms of crumple zone, I'd imagine death was pretty instant in the initial impact. The car is bent 90deg around the tree/lamppost. The engine will probably be on shear bolts. As soon as the engine breaks free, fuel goes everywhere. :(

Those monocoque chassis can be very strong. I've programmed NC machines to machine two different manufacturers carbon monocoque chassis now. I recall seeing one after it had had a pole fired at it end on, can't recall the speed but it was substantial, and it had hardly put a dent in it. The space you sit within is very protective and you rely on crumple zones attached around the chassis to absorb impacts. Unsure where the fuel tank is on the Carrera GT but on one of the chassis I worked on the fuel tank was inside the chassis! it was behind you and came down either side of the chassis almost to the front. The tank was bonded inside the chassis. I always thought I wouldn't want to be in that chassis if the tank somehow became ruptured and a fire started. The reason it is there is to keep the c of g as low as possible.

Sad that this happened, RIP to both involved and condolences to all family members effected by the death of these two people.

Maybe it's just me but on that live leak video it looks like tyre tread marks like the car did a u turn at quite some speed, losing control into the tree.

RIP Paul Walker and his friend.

Judging by the Google street view were the incident occurred it's a very wide 5 lane road with a quite a long bend from the direction the car came from. It's a damn shame this happened :(
