Why I hate DOTA2

Hi everyone,

I just need a place to vent, and as this sub forum is quite popular it seems to be a good place for it.

Now I will admit, DOTA2 itself, purely as a game, is actually great. However, the whole model concerning matchmaking is...broken.

A friend of mine introduced me to the game and it has one of the steepest learning curves imaginable, but this is OK, right? Many games are like this.

However, because this game is "free" it seems like everyone has at least 539 steam accounts with 1 game - DOTA2. Obviously, these are secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octonary, nonary and so on accounts. This means that people who are new to the game get matched up against those who realistically have a few hundred hours under their belt and consequently get the **** kicked out of them.

Allow me to draw a comparison - I've played the Counter Strike series of games since say, 1.3. Needless to say, I'm an experienced CS player (like I'm sure many of you are).

Now, would you take a team of newcomers and pitch them against season veterans immediately? No, of course you wouldn't, but this is what it feels like in DOTA2. It's completely relentless, unforgiving and unwelcoming to new players.

Then get better, it isn't that hard to get good enough to play at the lowest level. People with a few hundred hours are terrible at the game. You only have to read a few guides and watch a few videos to know as much as them.

DOTA 2 is a great game once you actually get into it.

The match making seems to weed out the "rerollers' for want of a better term. Some friends and I made new accounts to have a bit of fun with noobies after we'd started to get the hang of the game (actually I think it was to play with and teach another friend that had just started). Anyway, it didn't work out, cos the match making AI realised from the way we were playing that we had experience, and we got pitched against other players with some experience (some of whom were playing their 2nd match on inspection, but clearly had a lot of hours under their belt!)

I must get back into dota2 actually - it was a lot of fun :D

I don't play it myself but from what you say I wouldn't describe the match making situation as 'broken' as such, just way its being abused (intentionally or unintentionally), I'm not really sure how they can account for this.

How many games have you played?

Matchmaking is very volatile for the first few games, so these smurf accounts shouldn't be staying at beginner rating for very long. Also if you are constantly losing then your own rating will decrease below what a new account starts with, so you should stop getting matched with them.

Alternatively...find some friends to play with, the game is 100x more fun that way :).

mtfu :)

Carry on playing and Russians will be your main concern. If they charged money for an account it would stop everyone making smurf accounts and all the Russians. £20 for a dota 2 account = a months wages in Russia = no smurfs

True but playing people who are better than you is how you improve. All the hate you get etc etc you just need to ignore and suck it up soldier! game is great, and trust me like others have said, people who have played a load are ****e at this game! russians are the curse.

I am something like lvl 13 and its my only account... I play with my friend who is lvl 110 and err apart from using "smart dota words" I do same or better than him in our games.

He obviously laughs at me with his high level "mates" when I dont get a ****ing clue what they on about... But at the end of the day even if we both are hard carries I get more kills than him.

It is a pretty simple game, once you get the basics it dont matter whether its lvl 10 or 210... Dota is far away from counter-strike, cs is a game where if you dont play for 2 weeks you become utter poo.

The fact you equate kills to skills means this post can safely be ignored.

Saying Dota 2 is a "steepest learning curve" is a understatement.Issue with the game is that is always in a consent state of evolution, makes LoL look like a game of connect 4 :)

Hang in there and play with friends if you can, solo match making is never a good idea.

It happens in many skill-based games. It's called smurfing. Get used to it, or find another game.

Also, there's already a Dota 2 thread.

Play with friends, otherwise the first 20 odd games will make or break you.

Trust us it get's better. Also plenty of research about the game/guides will put you miles ahead of a lot of players.
