water vs deicer

here's what I do. Never fails.

I set the electric heater timers on the idrive to come on at 6:50am and 7:10am. Turn the temp dials to full and turn the fan speed to 3/4.

When I get up at 6:20, the car has a thick old frost on it. When I get outside to the car at 7:15, it's completely warm, deiced and ready to drive....

What is this water / de-icer / blanket / credit card witch craft that you speak of?

I've found that running the AC when it's very cold actually makes misting worse in my car, I guess the condensation doesn't drain away from the evaporator that well. I also have a leak and wet carpet in the back which doesn't help much.
To the point though, I tried the fairy liquid trick on the glass since I was reaching the end of my patience with the misting up. It really works, the windows barely mist at all now. Would recommend to anyone, do half the screen just to see the difference!

That would most likely be because the AC won't run below certain temps. The button will still light up but the system won't be on. Mine goes off below 4C and the car warns me by making a pinging sound and flashing the temperature on the trip computer. I think it goes off to reduct the risk of the system freezing or something.

I just start the car and let it run for 5~10 mins until it's clear whilst I drink my tea inside.

GT86 lives in a garage.
The X-Trail we've had for a couple of weeks and is parked outside, and usually only used in the evenings anyway - but as I occasionally use it to commute, if it does frost over it will probably be a quick squirt of de-icer and then scraped down.

Yeah well some of us aren't quite this luxurious :p

I have to walk uphill in the snow to even get to my car. Then walk back uphill when coming home.

Warm-ish water, I can't even open the door if I don't clear the front half of the drivers side window. You sort of have to throw it up at the bit at the top of the A-pillar so that it unsticks.

I get very little on the inside now. I keep an old sock stuffed full of those silicone drying bags that you get with new electrical goods :D

The last few days I used water and in the past I've always used water, but then I found a can of deicer in the kitchen cupboard and used it this morning, and now my windscreen is proper filthy.
