water vs deicer

I've had one frost so far, start car, press window demist button for front to get fans blowing, press rear de mister, scrape side windows, when I get to the front windows they are all slushy.

Is this actually a thing!?

Yup. I have a little app that allows me to do stuff around lights, locks and vents before I get into the car. So I can turn on the fans etc either on a timed basis or a few minutes before I need to go somewhere.

what's the range on that then? is it using BT, cars' wifi, mobile network? not a bad idea really!

How do you link the app to the car? I assume you can't just turn random peoples locks off with your phone <_<

here's what I do. Never fails.

I set the electric heater timers on the idrive to come on at 6:50am and 7:10am. Turn the temp dials to full and turn the fan speed to 3/4.

When I get up at 6:20, the car has a thick old frost on it. When I get outside to the car at 7:15, it's completely warm, deiced and ready to drive....

What is this water / de-icer / blanket / credit card witch craft that you speak of?

BMW's do this?! Looks like a BMW could be my next car..

lol @ boiling water trolling.

:p

To make up for my irresponsible misleading - here's some great advice: It's a good time to get chips rectified. Never mind boiling water (really don't do this), but even warm water or simply the hot air blowing from the heater can cause a crack to grow from an existing chip/smaller crack when it's really cold. Happened to me.

true story! I remember being down the volunteer gliding squadron a few winters back, sitting in the landrover waiting for things to heat up (gliders) and then there was this massive "crack" sound and I saw the crack shoot up through the windscreen :p was a case of..."I didn't do it...I was just sat here".

Cold tap water can work of frost, doesn't even need to be warm

Luke warm water for ice works a treat but make sure you get the wipers going sharpish or it'll all freeze again

A guy at my old work lives 5 mins away from work, and most of the time took the car to work, and his wife would cycle to work instead, AND use the bike to perform the work.

I saw someones rear screen shatter once, she was pouring a kettle onto it and boom it went. It kind of happened but I didn't really register it happen till a few seconds after. hohoho and all that :D

I imagine this is what my chauffeur does. Not that I ever acknowledge him.

Cold or lukewarm water with the wipers on and furious wiping anything off the inside with a tea towel that lives in my cars glovebox.

Start the engine, turn heated screens on, maybe use my debit card on the side glass while I wait 30 seconds if they have frost on them. Get back in, flick the wipers & drive away.

Get in, engine on, heated windscreen on. Very light spray of de-icer and scrape off for side windows. De-icer on front windscreen if really thick.

Back in car, sit shivering for a few minutes until front windscreen is liquid enough to use wipers on.

Drive.
