I've worked with a sociopath/psychopath for roughly 6 months. It wasn't one of those stereotypical highly intelligent violent type but all the typical characteristics were there: high charisma, no guilt or remose, deception, incapacity to mantain relationships etc.
He showed complete lack of empathy but, interestingly, he adapted and learned to fake it. I suspected what he was after a couple of months of working with him and I tested my hypothesis when his father (with whom had he no conflicts) became terminally ill with cancer. He would put up a fake facial expression of sadness when discussing the subject but at the first slight change of topic, his face would light up instantly and go back to normal (as if he was relieved after making an effort) . Any mention of the father would be accompanied by the activation of the "mask" followed by it being easily discarded soon after. His father's suffering had absolutely no emotional impact on him.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't aware of what he was and that he didn't "plan" to adapt to live as a normal person in society, it was more of a subconscious trial-and-error self-teaching. Fascinating creatures, these people.
