What? 3g won't affect phone signal.

What are you jabbering on about?

Why do you think every single phone manufacturer offers different 2G and 3G standby time? The 2G standby time is always a decent chunk longer than the 3G time, so if you're connected using 3G your battery will be used up quicker.

Got to say, I would have agreed with loltim. I don't know the technicalities of phones, but I don't really see why your data connection would alter your cell connection. You can turn it completely off for example and still make calls. I don't think I've ever seen talk time displayed as 2G or 3G?

For that matter, switching to 2G when you're on WiFi will make no difference, as it wont use mobile data at all as it has a WiFi connection.

Andy did you order that newer speaker?

Is there any difference in volume between the newer speaker and the old speaker with holes in it using the new firmware update which increased speaker volume?

Was just wondering if that was even louder than the stock speaker, although it is now pretty loud after the newest updates. In fact I tried youtube the other day and I didn't need to put it all the way up.

I'm starting to regret this purchase a bit. I've got a problem on my girlfriend's brand new Nexus 5. Been working ok for a week and then we finally got 4.4.2 pushed over the air to it. Fixed the speaker sound so it's a little bit louder, but now noticed that the signal has got awful. In fact, I have rebooted the phone and walked round the block to make sure it is not that it is weak in the house and I cannot get signal at all. I have tried putting it in and out of air plane mode, going to 2G only and then back, 3G, 4G, I cannot get signal at all. Emergency calls only.

I have another Andoird phone in the house also on Virgin (which uses TMobile / Orange as fall back) and it is fine. Never been amazing but can easily get 1 bar or 2 by a window. The Nexus will not get signal back at all.

What happened? Fault with the phone?

My phone contract is due for renewal and I've decided the nexus 5is my best option, I'm typing this on a nexus 7 and its great so that's made my decision for me.

I'm currently on 3 but the cheapest tarrif is £34 pm on 24 month contract (£29 if I don't have tethering but with 4g soo and a WiFi only tablet and vita I class that as a requirement) plus £49 upfront it seems a bit pricey... I'm going to speak to them tomorrow and see what they can offer.

Once its ordered I'll have a browse through the accessories thread for a nice flip case and I'll await its arrival.

Yes it does. I don't know the technicalities, but it must connect to a different signal.

I get an extra 10db when I switch to 2g. And I always get a better voice signal on 2g when I'm in a bad signal area.

Indeed. I can get one bar 3g or five bars 2g at work. Thankfully we have wifi for my internet needs ;)

The radio in the recent 4.4.2 update seems to be worse than the original 4.4 is better but you will have to flash back to it.

I just did an operator scan for mobile networks on the Nexus 5 and my Samsung Galaxy Ace. The Ace can find all UK operators inside my house. The Nexus can find:

O2
Vodafone

This is surely a classic sign of a weak antenna, in that O2 and Vodafone penetrate buildings better being different frequencies to the others.

So the new update appears to have mucked up the signal. OK so the next question somewhat inevitably, is can I fix this without rooting and mucking about with roms etc. This is my girlfriends phone and just want it to work asap for her.

The radio (modem) that came with 4.4.1 (not in 4.4.2 specifically, but you will have got it as part of the overall OTA) is called .23 and that for some is bugged and will give you **** signal, this is well documented across various forums such as XDA and even in this thread if you go back a few pages.

I myself had the same issue, flashed back the older .17 radio/modem and i'm back to normal. I assume they will fix it in the next update which I suspect will be very soon. Unlocking the bootloader and flashing the modem is not something you want to be messing with if you dont know what you're doing though.

I just walked round outside and tried everything and the phone will not find any networks other than O2 and Vodafone. Is it possible this is a genuine hardware fault do you think? EDIT: I mean to say it's working at such a low level it's gone bad?
