*** The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ***

HFR makes things look too real - which in a film where everything is fake is a massive problem - watched in normal 3D this time.

Indeed... however even shots that are outside for real, with no cgi still look weird and unreal, and I have no idea why. Same with the speeded-up effect, which I got a points throughout the film... why does HFR make things look as if its running too fast?... games running at 48 or 60fps don't look sped-up, so why does a film?

Probably because you are used to seeing games in higher frame rates than film.

When I first watched The Hobbit the first 10-15 minutes seemed like it was a bit sped up, but after that my eyes adjusted, and the whole experience was much less tiring for my eyes in 3D, than normal. It makes all 3D films at 24fps look migraine inducing by comparison, for me personally.

Saw this today at IMAX 3D HFR and it was absolutley fantastic.

The quality of the movie and the 3D was excellent.

Also a fantastic movie with some key characters showing up which made the film more enjoyable :D

Found it much better than the first film. The barrel scene had me in stiches and the battle scene with the Orcs at the Elven gate was one of the best action scenes I've seen.

I would have thought that fact would have made me more accepting of film @ 48FPS - Plus my perception of speed in games is the same regardless of frame rate, whether it be 10 or 300fps... strange it is.

I can see some advantages to HFR, obviously its smoother, and you don't get judder during horizontal panning, so maybe its less tiring, but I don't see how the over slick, soap opera effect can be mitigated, and the sense of epic returned.

Just saw this at the IMAX at Waterloo. I thought it was excellent from start to finish, not nearly as cartoony as the first one - and the Dragon!

Smaug was absolutely brilliant.

I see that the BFI IMAX is still not showing in HFR 3D. You'd have thought that of all cinemas screening it they would be able to do so. :(

I specifically didn't watch it in HFR, don't like it at all. I watched it in old fashioned 2d.

What's worse is someone actually says it in the film.

Its well made but there simply isn't enough story here to justify a 2 hour 40 minute film - so its quite dull as a consequence. Also why is Legolas such a ***** in this film?!

Hopefully Jackson will released a single 3 hour re-edit of the whole trilogy one day.......

Just as Lucas would not give people an unmolested Blu-ray release of the original Star Wars films, I can't see Jackson releasing a three hour Hobbit film with all the unnecessary stuff removed. As Gandalf would say; 'there was never much hope, just a fools hope'.

Seen it last night aswell

Gandalf vs Sauron was absoutley epic, shame we couldn't see a similar battle when he becomes Gandalf the White to show he was on equal or at least has a lot more power than last time

Pretty much have to agree with everything you've said mate.

HFR makes such a difference when watching it, less tiring on the eyes, eveything is so smooth and your eyes don't get lost in high intensity battle scenes, nothing is missed.

Smaug coming into the film was just amazing I have to say, they did a terrific job with him, that was a fantastic example of CGI.

What an ending as well! :D

Saw it last night in IMAX and quite enjoyed it. CGI looked great as well as the actions scenes, but 3D didn't add anything to it. I probably preferred the first film only because I thought this one dragged a bit. Could have been 30 minutes shorter really.

Yeah but you have to remember Sauron wasn't at full strength, he was just 'The Necromancer of Dol Guldur' at this point of time starting remanifestation.

bear in mind that even shots that look like they are just outside are probably either heavily cgi or actually in a studio and fake.

Never bothered watching the first film but watched this last night.

The ending, those ********!

Still not a patch on the LOTR films, and I think they should have just done the hobbit in the two films as this was quite drawn out, god knows how slow the first was.

Saw it on Friday at the imax in manc, thought it was better than the 1st for sure! Although Legolas looks so CGI it's weird.

Yeah I noticed that. His eyes looked weird.

Am I the only one that found Evangeline Lilly even more erotic with her pointed elf ears?:o

I thought they looked a bit unrealistic and out of proportion (too big and kinda plastic like) - but of course sir - each to their own ;)

Overall - I wasn't too impressed. There were bits where I thought well how the eck did he know such and such was there etc, and the CGI was a tad over the top aswell....

I think that two parts was pushing it but three is just taking the mick - its nowhere near as epic as the original LOTR!

The Hobbit don't really have any epic scene when compared to LoTR, e.g. Helms Deep. The 3 part bit annoy the heck out of me but the missus and I still went and watch it on Saturday...

I enjoyed it in parts but it did, as usual, felt dragged on a little.

Had to make a comment when the dwarves were having 'a barrel of fun' (Was funny in my head). Anyway, just another 360 odd days before we get part 3 of 1. Bah!
