Advice : leaving my car in -10*C with snow for a week

It'll be fine. Just remember to leave the shovel and brush outside the car ;)

That's a lot of yellow snow! Someone had a very full bladder :p

I would leave the handbrake off just to be on the safe side - mine seized up in the really cold winter a couple of years ago and the car was stuck for 2 weeks before it defrosted :p

Only thing I'd contemplate is not leaving the handbrake on but leaving it in gear. I've found that leaving a car that long in those conditions the rear break pads freeze to the disc. Yes, it does break when you pull away but its one hell of a crack that at the very least can't do it good long term.

Guess I could just smell it??

Er, you could do but it won't tell you much :p

Ideally you should know whether or not the coolant is in good condition and in the right ratio of water/antifreeze. When was it last changed? Is it the blue type or the pink/orange type? Blue type should typically be changed every two years, or 5 years for the orange/pink stuff. If you can't even tell what type it is from looking at the header tank because it just looks like water then it's probably so old and diluted down it should be changed anyway.

The last few months for work I leave my car in the parking lot, it gets covered in snow and sits at -20 for 15 days. I get back, turn the key and it struggles just long enough for me to think 'oh crap it's not going to start' (only a couple of seconds really), then it starts, I brush all the snow off and drive home fine. It has a block heater which I really should use but can't be bothered...

Try starting a truck in that sort of weather though - all kinds of fun! We just leave them running for weeks straight while they are in the field and laugh at Prius owners trying to save the planet.

For the small change it would cost, if you don't know just pay £10 for one of those winter checks the garages offer. They'll check the mixture for you and test it along with a load of other stuff

Don't do what I did with the passat once... use your wipers to brush the snow off your windscreen with your door open... it wasn't pleasant having about 3 litres of snow in my car :(

Left my Firebird out in similar conditions and that was just fine :p

HNNNGGG! I have always lusted after a Firebird and a TVR Cerbera. I did not just look at the classifieds ..... there is not a dark blue 1969 Firebird with full rebuild & resto for sale. Thank god I'm poor till April. :D
