Why should we accept and accommodate people being fat?

I have no issue with people being fat. Personally I find fat people abhorrent but I have just as much right to that opinion as people have to be lardy. What really gets on my nerves though is when you get "fat advocates" complaining that regular sized things are too small and therefore discriminatory.

What really gets on my nerves is the media and everytime it whips up the public.

Personally, I find people who hate fat people to fairly abhorrent.. I suppose it's not very PC anymore to hate many of the groups that were hated in the past, and people have to find a reason to hate other people, right?:p

Excellent, retorting to insults and flippant comments. Well done Elmarko!

Consider this one...people with addictions. How do they beat them?

Answer...willpower. Their body craves and demands the subject of their addiction they make the decision not to give in. They could be lazy and give up but they don't. They use mental and often physical effort.
Think of that addiction like the genes that are present in the study you mentioned. People could be lazy like i've been suggesting and give in to the urges and cravings or they could be strong.
Not really, just I decided after careful consideration you have no desire to look at the matter further than the first stage of understanding - making the entire debate with you utterly pointless.

If you are unwilling to do the reading on the subject to understand it's complexity don't expect people to respect your opinions.

The IQ comment was in jest (we have fun here also), but he part asking about your personal situation was actually serious.

If you think that willpower is something you just activate when needed, then by that logic you should be a perfectly sculpted figure of masculinity with an amazing well paid job.

If not you are just stupid & lazy (but your own logic) - which isn't actually the view I hold, I'm just judging you by your own standards.

Just live and let live..I would rather judge people by who they are rather than what they look like.
Exactly.

That time you came to the boards to ask for someone on here to be witness to your wedding made me feel bad for and pity you.

Indeed. But, hell why sugar coat it....

I cant believe Lysander said that tbh, given the hassle he has had on this forum and those who defended him when he thought he was being bullied etc.

I was once 17 stone, you think people calling me fat made it any easier to lose that weight? It's not your body its not your problem.

Though I agree when it comes to someone suing a restaurant because their doors are "Too small" its gone too far

I'm very slim, I eat normally, its just the way I am. Once a woman in a shop pretty much told me to eat more..... wtf? she wouldn't have told a fat person to eat less would she?

Its some how socially acceptable to tell someone to eat more, yet not tell someone else (who would no doubt be a lot more un healthier than me) to eat less.

Im with Ricky.

Same reason why you pointed out she was a 'stupid woman', when you'd be unlikely to pick out a man for saying the same. Sexist/Fatist, same issue.
Finding labels for people isn't helpful (or polite), providing help to reduce weight is the only sensible response.
It's sexist to call a woman stupid, only men can be stupid.

We shouldn't encourage people to be fat, in the same way we shouldn't encourage people to smoke. Both are unhealthy

+1.

If they want to be like that fine but we shouldn't accommodate the unhealthy.
I.. bigger seats etc. If they have to squeeze into the seats it forces the issue and offers gentle encouragement.

But the way the UK is they'd just quit travelling to work because they can't get to work and sit at home on benefits watching Jeremy Kyle whilst living on chips.

Yes... people who do nothing to help themselves annoy me!! I'll help anybody do anything as long as they are willing to see it through.

It worked for me, sometimes just what you need is someone else saying "oi porky mcfat****" to make you realise that it's not ok to carry on as you are and you can't hide behind the "it's ok I might be heavy but I carry it well" thinking until you end up in an oversized box.
It's nice to just have people come out with things without coating it in "nice feels" bs first.

Gervais makes some good points but what he fails to mention when he says "if you consume more calories than you burn off you get fat" is that everyone's rate of 'burning off' is different meaning that that two people who are exactly the same height can eat the same diets and one may get fat whilst they other stays as skinny as a rake.

I'm heading towards my mid-thirties and the pop-belly is starting to develop despite me eating less now than I did 10 years ago. In my mid-twenties I could eat all day and not put on a single pound whereas nowadays two days of lager and the odd pork pie in a row and I get a beer belly.

My dad eats hardly anything yet he can't shift that beer belly look, 20 years ago when I was a kid he didn't have am ounce of fat on him despite spending 3 nights out of 7 in the pub.

Exactly, a great example is my team at work, none of us are overweight & all are pretty healthy - but, two of the guys eat multiple muffins a day & do no exercise & maintain their weight - me & the other guy have to visit the gym 4 times a week & monitor our calorie intake to do the same.

Everybody knows a few ultra skinny guys who eat like pigs, its hardly a rare occurrence - if one extreme exists why wouldn't another?. The simple fact is we all respond differently to food.

Quite. Also you can be outwardly thin yet inwardly fat..with excessive visceral fat lying around major organs which is as unhealthy or even unhealthier than the chap with the beer belly.

My father in law..a very healthy looking and fit person is currently under treatment for exactly this issue. Its very common, but many people do not realise until their health has already declined.
