** SAPPHIRE CUSTOM 290's ARE ON THE WAY!! **

Well, with my specs, and my 290 oc'ed to 1200/1550 or so, i can match the OC firestrike performance of this Tri-x. Obviously you are paying for temps and less noise etc, although i need to so see how much on an increase i can get with less than a huuggggeee fan speed.

Im sure it goes a little something like this..

Dual X > Vapor X > Toxic (7xxx Series)

Tri X > Vapor X > Toxic (for the 290's at least)

:)

I think the Toxic uses the Vapor X chamber with higher clocks and a better PCB

Thanks. I'm only been following current GPUs since October and it's been easier to gather what the 'elite' cards are from Nvidia's partners than AMDs ie: Lightning, Classified and HOF.

I gather then that so far it will likely be MSI Lightning and Sapphire Toxic at the top end with the 290x? Should release be expected around February? I know nobody has a crystal ball, it's just that I'm sure there are regular trends with these releases.

I should mention that I will be air cooling and just want the best possible gaming performance, I won't be benching so if you don't believe that use justifies the extra wait (so much wait!) and expense of an 'elite' card then feel free to say :)

Only the die hard AMD fans will have waited for these and maybe bitcoin miners

They look great but they're a month too late. :)

How do you work that out? Have you missed the 100's post by members all stating they are waiting for the quieter cooler running custom versions of 290 cards?

We've taken over 100 orders already for the Gigabyte versions and they are on pre-order, that makes them even more popular than 290 was at launch.

Most miners don't care about the cooler, they just want price point.

GTX780's dropping to around £350 on a few sites, some special offers and some are not. Would cost you more to buy R290 plus cooler so right now there's not much point waiting if your a gamer.

I also posted that I was waiting for non-reference version a while back but AMD took too long. :D

Well I prefer to go from the real numbers which show 290 custom to be selling already faster than 290 reference was.

The 290 is faster than a GTX 780, the custom cards even more so as they come overclocked and once prices have settled custom 290's will sit in the 360-400 price range, same as 780. Yet 290 is faster, has better OC headroom potential, has a very high-end sound card onboard, is also handy for mining with ;) and if Mantle kicks off then some big performance leaps still to come.

There is a review posted above that says otherwise, the non-reference versions of X290 and GTX780 perform about the same. Looks like GTX780 does a little better at 1080/1600p overall while the X290 does better at 4k.

GTX780's have a fair amount of headroom as well, 1200-1300 is easy.

Mantle is vaporware for now, I think the sales are largely due to mining.

Thats dangerous talk on a GPU forum.

The Kitguru review posted in this very thread seems to suggest otherwise, have we read the same review? They say it trade blows with Lightning GTX 780, one of the fastest most overclockable GTX 780's ever released, it beats the Lightning or matches it in several test and beats the reference 780 in every game test.

To me the performance though close to the 780, the 290 does have the slight edge, I've had 780's clocked upto 1400MHz, but I've also had 290's clocked at 1225MHz so both cards clock well and both cards are very close, but the 290 does offer better value in my opinion. After all Lightnings and Classified's are still over £400.

Mantle vapour ware, only time will tell, I've seen what it can do, so if AMD can make it a reality then people will be impressed, if they can......

As already said it's trading blows with the Lightning which is a monster card. Not to mention also that the GTX only has 3GB VRAM.

If it came to pass, I wouldn't buy the GTX now

Hi there

Sapphire have done OcUK a big favour, we shall get our first batch, fingers crossed after Boxing Day. :)

MSI GTX780 Lightning was at stock, it was not overclocked, it's clockspeeds are comparable to many other non-reference GTX780 which are cheaper so it's not special at all in that regard.

Those overclocks don't sound right for stock cooling, most GTX780 max out at 1200-1250, if you get to 1300 your lucky and even then probably not game stable. I'm going to presume your overclocking numbers for the R290 are just as unreliable. :p

Nope, we had Classified on its stock cooler, fans at 100% running at 1384MHz stable, benchmarking, game testing the whole lot, with zero artifacting.

R290 the same, 1200MHz is possible, stable, quite a few people here have achieved the same, some higher.

Our results are spot on.
