Anyone played Rocksmith 2014?

I played the guitar for about 7 years, but I haven't played it any sense for about 3 years and I haven't even picked it up in about 8 months. :(

Would this be a decent way for me to get back into the swing of things? Is it actually an effective way of learning how to play/de-rusting your playing skills?

One of the issues with the original Rocksmith (not sure how 2014 stacks up) is that although it explains what everything is, it doesn't show good fundamentals, like finger placement, movement and suchlike.

I'd been learning (from a book) for 6 months beforehand, so it wasn't an issue for me, but I suspect it may get you into some bad practices?

Again, not sure if this is 'fixed' in 2014, but I know some reviews were critical of this if you were a total beginner.

Where's the best place to get it from, I looked on steam but the cost of the cable on it's own seems to be the same as the software, Amazon only have the old version with the cable.

I have both and only really put it on when my nephews and brother-in-law are over for a drink.

One thing I did notice is that there seems to be far more songs requiring you to drop tune.

I may have only a Epiphone Les Paul but I certainly do not want to keep doing that.

Why?

And what does "only having an Epiphone LP" have to do with it? :p

I can't be 100% certain but I am sure I read on the Rocksmith steam forums about the effect on the guitars neck from constant drop tuning.

Disclaimer: I generally play this game when I am drinking with others but as I stated above, It seemed to me when playing 2014 the songs we were playing all require retuning.

I did read even during the first edition that people were in fact using one guitar for standard tuning and another, dare I say it cheaper guitar for those drop tunings. I for one have followed this advice.

My statement with regards to my Epiphone is a cautionary one. It is by no means an expensive guitar but I use a cheaper guitar for this purpose.

I don't think the constant de-tuning would have a noticeable effect to be honest. Some songs require drop tuning, that's just the way it is. Some guitarists drop tune frequently to play some songs, particularly if they are in a band in which some of the songs require drop tuning. And those guitarists often have very expensive equipment. If you think about it you are slackening off one string at a time so the tension is coming off very slowly. :)

I can see how theoretically it could cause warping of the neck, but I have never heard about it or experienced it. The guitar should be built well enough to withstand all that nonsense.

I myself have an Epiphone Les Paul like you (mine is cherry sunburst) and a Squier Strat. During the 7 years when I played actively I would play every day, and would often de-tune once or twice every session. :)

Sure I understand that.

My views I suppose were only from the experience I had playing the latest one and of course our song selections just so happening to be the songs that required altering the tuning.

Oh and mines a 2001 Samick Gold top.

Well I bought and after bit of messing about to get it working (changing the screen resolution in the ini file) it's really fun. Taking a bit of getting used to the tab though after years of standard tab.

I thought the original Rocksmith dlc was supposed to be compatible with the 2014 version but steam won't let you buy it because it can't see the original software?

So bit of a bump (apologies if I should have created a new thread) but can you buy rocksmith 1 dlc if you only own rocksmith 2014? Just picked up a bass I've been after for many years for a seller price despite not having played in about 6 years and figured this would be a fun way to get some use out of it.

There is conversion tool you have to buy to import stuff from the first one into 2014. It is one steam but it's not immediately visible.

Do I need to own the first game+conversion tool to import dlc or just dlc and conversion tool? As I was under the impression you need the base game on steam to buy the dlc

I bought the game from a major internet based supplier, as a boxed package with the cable. I did buy a lot of dlc songs during winter sales, so keen to see if they reappear in the summer sale, especially the Jimi Hendrix package. Boom chukka wah-wah!

I've fallen out of playing (Which is galling) when the strap on my guitar (or is it axe?.. I dont think Im good enough at playing it to call it an axe :P )

Anyway, it slipped and hit the ground and knackered the rocksmith cable.. Anyone know any good places to pick up a new one without the £30 premium price tag? :P
