Hi guys.

Is there any real world performance gain in getting a Western Digital 3TB Red over the 3TB Green, bearing in mind it will used as a bog-standard internal storage drive, no RAID or NAS?

Or spend a bit more and get a Black which gives 5 year warranty i know it's a bit of over kill but it depends on how much your data is worth.

Nothing to do with how much data is worth imo. If you value the data you'll have a proper backup solution. What matters is cost now vs. cost of replacing the drive when it fails.

The WD Green and Seagate are the same price so the extra warranty on the Green would make that the logical choice.

Whether the extra £20 for a year's longer cover on the Red vs the Green is the question here.

It's personal preference, the replacement cost of a 3tb drive in 2yrs time is still likely to be >£50, but I'd probably rather have the £20 available for other things now.

Plumped for the Red in the end.

Ran a quick HDTune test to compare it against my SamsungF4 and seems quite a bit faster, minimum transfer rate double at 128MB/s, average is 143 versus 106.

Ultimately I need it for the storage capacity and the Black is just too expensive.

What's the noise from it like?

I can't hear any noise from it or any of my other drives, but then the case deadens most noise and is underneath my desk in the living room.
