M&S have dropped a clanger

M&S clothing isn't doing all that great while their food part is doing well, so they decide to stir this divisive crap up to dent the successful part of the business. Couldn't make it up.

Pretty much this. The business is a disaster apart from the food. They really should have thought this through.

Customers don't want the added hassle/embarrassment of finding a check out assistant of the correct race or religious persuasion. It's just really bad customer service.

Wow, driving another wedge between Muslims and the rest of the world. Well done those involved...

It's Islam and it's followers driving wedges. Everywhere you look in Western society, some professional knee jerk offense taking Muslim is whinging about some blasphemy in order to make non Muslims subjugate and sacrifice their equality. They insist we change our culture in order to accommodate theirs. They insist we change our laws in order to accommodate theirs. They insist on special privilege and special treatment. They insist, they insist, they insist. It's about time they were told point blank to **** off !

Genuinely laughed when I read the opening post. If the situation arose I would just laugh at them and leave the money on top of the till and walk out with my bacon.

It's just a policy put in place to cover their backs should some fool member of staff take them to court because their "rights" were being violated. That staff will just decline to sell it and another staff will make the transaction - Seems simple enough?

On the other side though you have restaurants and stores owned by religious people who are fully licensed to sell Alcohol and will be glad to sell you their stock without kicking up a fuss over which is essentially absolutely a non issue.

It's a business they're running, they're not actually consuming or touching the drink or meat raw so again, to me the people who do decline are just being an arse for the sake of being an arse and causing a scene and those kind of people exist in all beliefs.

Spot on

It's religious principles, not specifically Islamic ones. Religions often ask for exceptions to rules, such as for marriage. Cases like this just pander to the xenophobic population's desire to have a white power nation.

We live in a country with many laws and policies which are designed to accommodate people of different faiths and cultures
What laws are those then? I can only think of the Incitement to Religious Hatred
So, I go to M&S, there is a woman wearing a Islamic headwear, do I risk offending her or go to another checkout?
Why would being a normal customer offend a muslim? If she refuses to serve you then she is the one providing the offence by implicitly disapproving of your purchases.

For those comments regarding "this doesn't affect anyone", the issue is one of principle.

Hi, can you get me 100g of xenophobic please? Thanks
oh sorry, meant to PM this :o

So do you think condom sales will/should be mitigated for those of a devout Christian background?
'Oh I am sorry I can't sell you those, I'd prefer you get AIDS, its store policy for you to stand and wait embarrassed by your own choices in our store, but we are singling you the customer out, and we'll be along soon with another staff member to serve you, just stand and wait'

Who are you suggesting is driving the wedge?

Some Muslims.

I know several Muslim owned establishments which sell alcohol.

If I ever was reluctant to sell alcohol to someone it would not be because an invisible sky-man has banned it. It would be because of the physical harm it could potentially cause mostly short term. I mean you can have a bit of an idea on who's buying alcohol to abuse it and go mental and who's buying it to have a small drink in front of the fireplace.

Hmm more and more people these days are tolerating these stupid changes to our lives lest we offend someone

I wonder what would happen if as an employee I refuses to employ anyone if they believed in religion of any sorts on the ground that their obviously a ******* idiot for believing in fairy tales?

Would I have any rights as an employee to knock back people who are in my opinion needing some emotional or psychological crutch believing these tales?

I think the rule is outrageous, because t only applies to religious people, and because you shouldn't work somewhere where you can't actually work.

I don't, however, agree with the way that Muslims will now be singled out based on the opinion of a very small minority. If I were a Muslim, particularly one who didn't agree with the rule, and had to go to work tomorrow at M&S I'd be bricking because of all the cretins who can't separate the minority from the majority.

There are bound to be a few people who just go in there to wind up staff.

That doesn't work though. I don't want a Turkish bloke at my newsagent that doesn't speak English properly and has all his Turkish mates loitering around and speaking other languages. They don't WANT to integrate and so I don't WANT them here.

Not exactly difficult is it. I don't go to turkey and have an English man offering me fish and chips.

Dude they are here to take your money, feed you slop and use the gain to further themselves and their own cause. They aren't here to be all nice and make some new best friends. They too see an us and them. Except their them is us.

The non muslim staff at the check out will be working harder and the muslim working at a snail's pace. What about if you do on-line shopping and find out there is no alcohol or pork because a muslim was doing your shopping.

I wouldn't worry. The tillerman has only a job to serve what people want.

They will soon be replaced with self service machines due to ridiculous demands like this.

If she won't do the job she was hired for she should be fired. There are many unemployed people who WILL scan Pork meats & alcohol, Muslim or not. Personal superstitions should not override your contract with your employer.

Yup, shouldn't take religion to work. They're paid to scan pieces of plastic and glass, not the direct product ffs as part of their duty. Offensive? Then leave the retail sector and find yourself another bloody job. It will free up the vacancy as quoted above for someone who needs income. It does look once again like a case of the UK enforcing a soft spot for 1 certain religion though. I think it's a shame because M&S have done pretty poorly in recent years and their stance on over-aged customers telling them what they can and can't have (nanny state) is going to hurt their business further.

They're discussing this right now on LBC radio with Clive Bull phone in. It would be great if someone from here with strong views rang them. If you do, record the phone call and upload it here. :D

in their decision to allow Muslim staff to refuse to sell you bacon or Alcohol.

What the hell are they thinking :rolleyes:

This is going to get some traction I can see it coming.

If I was refused to be sold some product from their store due to the religious beliefs of the checkout staff member serving me, I'd dump the lot there and walk out and shop somewhere else.

PC correctness gone mad!

I'd kick up a right old fuss and make sure everyone hears me. ****ing redicolous
