M&S have dropped a clanger

It is ironic that M&S, in trying to create a discrimination-free work environment, have just filled up the tank of the anti-Islamic rage machine.

Maybe this will learn them to better micro-manage every single member of staff based on their religious beliefs, sexual preference, shoe size and favorite metalcore album.

Why is most prisons full with white people? Should be full of Muslims right? Get all the Muslims in there

Typical.. Full of hatred when it comes to bashing Muslims. Did anyone read the actual article?

When a white boy kills a Muslim boy, its a non story. When Muslims raises their voice it become a media meltdown.

Continue with the hatred whites people.

I like howyou bring colour into this argument.

Daily fail/Torygraph non-story/slow news day filler = ocuk race hate anti-Muslim campaign yet again

Is common sense but some just take it to the extreme, what's next? Ban pictures with pork and alcohol from the newspaper ads.

Chuck a Muslim on a deserted island with just pork and alcohol, what do you think will happen? :D

Are you serious?
It would save time if you went straight into your counter argument instead of pretending I say anything for fun. Muslims make the headlines say about once a month? So I'll need twelve headlines from you for each religion, where they are doing something in the name of their religion that is likely to irritate a typical Telegraph reader. Please don't fill it all with people shooting stuff, everyone does that.
Seems to have touched a nerve with bitslice. I recommend you move to a country with fewer Muslims.
Well actually Muslims don't annoy me as such as everyone I've met personally has been a lovely human being. The women in burkas I see in supermarkets are really unpleasant to come across though. I blame the daleks.

But as an inner city group they appear to avoid all responsibility for themselves? Whatever happens is always someone else's action and it's always nothing to do with Islam, they desperately need an ecclesiastical hierarchy to boot out the nutters but they are far too arrogant about their perfect religion to see all its flaws. A religion defined by ignorant nutters is always going to represent its teachers.

I live in the country so Labour's failed multicultural experiment has yet to "enrich" my life, so anything I post is always just to defend some principle I think is important. No point being upset about a group I rarely see in my life, that's somebody else's problem :)

Ta.

Why? Why should one set of people be given an easier ride than the rest of us?

Why do you think that's OK? Is it because you're Christian? Is it because it's been indoctrinated into you that's just the right way to be?

I don't understand why you think one form of positive discrimination is OK and the other isn't, at least M&S are being fair with it.

How is it fair, forgot the muslim haters. How is protecting some beliefs ok, but not others. Why do religious beliefs outweigh personal beliefs.

Also how does the law stand on this of at all. If it was medical and you didn't declare it you could be dismissed. Could sainsburys who don't have the policy come into legal bother.

Also satire :) and kind of the point why is it just religious beliefs and where do you draw the line.

this has probably been said in the previous 11 pages :p but its nothing to do with Muslims per se.

Only reason someone should be giving for refusing to do their job is for health reasons (or obvious moral/legality reasons)

Any other reason - then you shouldn't be working there at all. If you cant do the job...then jog on!

Dont really shop at M&S but certainly won't now (if story is confirmed).

This has to be bs ?

if this became the norm id never hire a jew, muslim, or person of faith to work for me again.

Moral and religious grounds ? If its that offensive why work in a shop that sells it.

To be fair Muslims are disproportionately represented in the UK prison population (approx. 12% compared to 4.5% of the population) but I would say that is more to do with economic disadvantage than religion.

Right, so your argument isn't that there's zero negative press about other religions. Your argument is that there's nothing negative that 'is likely to irritate a typical Telegraph reader'.

There's plenty of negative stories in the press related to other regions - child abuse, opposition to abortion, opposition to contraception, opposition to equal marriage, opposition to women priests, opposition to adoption by gay couples, refusal to slaughter TB-infected cows, extremists protesting at funerals, etc., etc., etc. These stories might not irritate Telegraph readers so much but they're still negative stories.

Established religion != state religion.

Uhm, yes it is.

A state religion (also called an established religion, state church, established church, or official religion) is a religious body or creed officially endorsed by the state. A state with an official religion, while not secular, is not necessarily a theocracy.

I don't understand why people waste their time trying to argue a point which can be verified with a quick Google search.

Once again, a large organisation has gone out of their way to give an answer to a problem that was never there and in the process, Muslims have gotten the blame. I'm willing to bet my right arm that there are thousands of Muslim M&S workers literally face palming and saying "FFS" because the company they work for has gone out of its way to prove they're not racist and in the process made it look like the Muslim workers wanted this change.

It was like when a council insisted on calling Christmas decorations "Winter decorations" or something in an apparent attempt not to offend Muslims/anyone. Little did they know that there was in fact NO ONE who was offended by this and many Muslims were asking why the hell the council have done this. Then the media got hold of it and made it look as though this is something Muslims have been campaigning for.

If I was a Muslim I'd be pretty ****ed that all these people keep doing stuff in an attempt not to offend but instead they end up dragging your religion through the mud as it inevitably gets picked up by the media.

Well said. Once again it's people causing a problem by trying to avoid a phantom one.

Evidently the worker did want the change, or else they'd have happily served the customer.

There is absolutely a servile attitude towards minorities amongst our elite, but there are plenty amongst those minorities also looking to take advantage of every opportunity they can.
