Opinions on £3k spec please

As soon as Christmas is out of the way I'm planning on purchasing a full rig and peripherals again. So far I've got this spec together, I'm going to have a couple of custom things done to the case hopefully and I'm trying to look to adding a second GPU and water clocking within 6 months.

Is there anything I should look to change on this spec? I love high end gaming and record footage too.

Also, regarding the Parvum cases, I notice that you can have a dvd loading slot put in, but I've never really found I've needed one once the OS was installed. Any options so I can just not bother with a dvd drive?

Ah ok, thanks for pointing that out, could have been a daft mistake!

Would you be able to recommend a case that will fit the MB? I would have liked the parvum but I'm prepared to have something else.

The RAM in the spec is just a place holder as OcUK don't stock the kits I was after to complete it, This spec is themed (Red & Black as well as Corsair & Gigabyte) before you say "HOW MUCH" you may notice that for a small increase on your budget I have included 2x GTX 780Ti's for SLI action and 2x 256GB Samsung SSD's for some Raid 0.

The memory kits that your after are as follows:

Yeah if I could have hid the PSU like you can in the Corsair 540 Air then I would have changed it but as your see the ugly cables coming out the PSU in this case I thought it best to use a PSU that has the red braid that goes straight into it :p. I know that I picked the AX***i as well but show me where OcUK stocks the old cable kits to match the theme ;)

theres nothing mentioned about sound in your list, might be worth using the left over cash for a sound card and headphone / speakers
 
£3k on a PC ???
My opinion is that is mental dude. No way is a PC worth that much.
The new mac pro perhaps but not a PC, besides in 12 months it will be lucky to be worth
half that.
 
why would spend 3k on a mbp be ok but spending 3k on a pc isnt? other than being an apple fan boi how exactly would you come to the conclusion that one lump of metal and silicon is ok but another is not? At least when buying kit from ocuk you get decent support rather than the usual tosh you get from apple

Why is not going 2011 a bit draft? For gaming 2011 will not bring you a massive performance increase over 1155/1150 by the time games can actually see and use more then 8 cores the chances are that a 2011 rig will be so old hat that it will need replacement.
 
Thanks for the replies lads, regarding getting a Mac and how much I'd like to spend. I don't really mind what it's worth in 6months time or whatever. Gaming is a big hobby of mine and I help run a gaming community, so I'm sure I'll get my monies worth :-)

I've already travelled the Mac route and I'll be letting them go once I have a PC built again. I never had to worry about a virus but for the money they cost they're not good vfm.

I appreciate the spec suggestions, I'll look into them in more detail this evening, in not sure about the 290x sli though, I have read on here they run hot, would that be an issue with only fan cooling? The same for having 780ti sli now too. I had presumed a move to water cooling when adding a second card would be needed to keep temps sensible for gaming.

You will not have any problem with cooling with my spec as the cards will dump the heat into the case but with the 5 fans that I have spec'ed you will be fine with SLI, you could go watercooling but that will add more to the cost of the build.

That's great to know, as is the comments on reasons not to worry about 2011 socket just yet.

On the note of sounds, I already have a sennheiser 360D headset and use a blue snowball mic. I had a dedicated sound card before but it caused a terrible noise that was picked up when recording (like a very fast clicking) and it out me off a bit. Perhaps one with shielding would help in that respect? I tried my old rig with it as far from the gpu as possible but it made no difference.

I suppose the only reasons I didn't want to water cool now is because I've not learned quite enough about it just yet, and I wanted to spend as much as possible on a great spec then apply some learning to the water cooling to make the best job of it. I'm happy to listen to ideas on having a single gpu and water cooling now though. But if air will be fine for the build suggested above it's something I'll take more time over.

With the amount of heat the 780ti's will kick out, won't 2 reference models be wiser.

Shhhhhh you ;) The GTX780Ti is still the quicker card in terms of a single GPU but that's just the limits of the stock cooler with the new cards with the custom coolers just being released that could be a game changer on air but water is a different kettle of fish .....

I have seen SLI GTX 780Ti's in a air cooled case with the same spec that I basically posted and the CPU temps at 4.7GHz were fine as were the GPU temps at around the 80c mark on the top card which is perfectly normal for an SLI configuration in a closed case at maxi chat on air.

The ref card could possibly cool a bit better but I think the effect on a system with be minimal. The ref card will dump heat generated dumped outside the case but it doesn't fit the theme that I was going for as well :D.
