Is Xmas magical anymore?

When I was younger I absolutely used to love the run-up to Christmas. The cold weather, the carols or classical music, the tree, the food and the organic nature of everything all made the whole thing special.

However, these days all Xmas seems to be about is deals at M&S, iPhones, X Factor and Amazon Prime. The problem is that these things aren't specifically related to Xmas, they're there all year round but just more prevalent in December, so it doesn't seem special.

In spite of the fact that I don't own a television it's still hard to avoid the above.

Have we totally lost the magic of Xmas in favour of commercialism? Or are major retail discounts the new 'magic'?

Yes the Christmas number one is directly linked to John Lewis Advert. And people are gullible to believe its not

I'm talking about atmosphere more than anything else. But yeah, I have to buy more stuff of course.

Whats the temperature like outside? With me its pretty chilly.

Do you have a tree up? Is there an event in your local town square etc? Both tree and carols will be sung here (well its maybe a bit wild weather wise)

Classical music? Many shops certainly have 'festive' music on the go these past few weeks.

Food? Yes plenty of that, its Christmas after all.

The organic nature of everything? Please explain that one considering you've listed all the other cliched items involved in Christmas

from the age of 18 to 23/24 Christmas was all about having a few days off work, going out, getting bladdered, getting home at 6am on the 25th December and rinse&repeat for 3 days and the same on NYE.

But since my lad was born (now 10) Christmas is better, it's about friends and family, spedning time visiting them over the festive period and then Xmas day is always just about me, my wife and son at home. I look forward to him opening his gifts, then havign an epic Xmas lunch.

Then falling asleep watching TV around 4pm on the afternoon.

Then boxing day seeing family again.

NYE is still about me though, tend to throw epic hous parties, which soem of the OcUK lads will confirm are great.

This year is about Dublin though! 4 days, child free!

Its all over in just over 24 hours...Don't sweat it. :p

Its all pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things....Searching for that sparkle aint gonna happen. Christmas is commercial nonsense....

I'm off work so to avoid the Christmas TV car crash I will be installing Mysql database on the server in the study to pump HD movies to all my XBMC devices in the house.

I will be drinking heavily:p

I wont be watching re runs and old films like Harry potter one on ITV ...

Thats my Christmas day sorted...

Magic stopped for me when I was about 13 and from then on every year I find I tend to dislike it more and more and by my mid 20s had completely stopped celebrating it. But this year going up to see family as have not had xmas with them for 3 years and promised I would.

I see grown men where I work get caught up in it big time, getting realy excited etc one guy in postroom must be over 40 and put up one of those chocolate calendars.

I know what you mean. To me, it's now just an excuse to get drunk (as if I needed one anyway!), eat lots of food and of course hang out with family. However, once I have kids in the future I can definitely see me going all out to make it extra special.

Sometimes taking leave at xmas can be a waste of leave as when you do work it, itsa realy quiet and just sit all day remoted in to home pc wasting time. But i find that i take holiday during normal work week throughout the year that i always get contacted by work and asked to remote in, unless i leave the country. So at xmas only time of year i can take holiday and not be disturbed by work.

It's unavoidable but I wish the Christmas rush didn't start so early as by the time the day comes round you're definitely a bit sick of it. It's a bit depressing to see Christmas stuff reduced to clear before the day's even happened too.

We love Christmas. Daughter is so excited!

We go to mass on Christmas Day. Best part of Christmas, to celebrate the birth of our dear Lord Jesus.

Merry Christmas to everyone, even all you athiests! Lol God bless you all

I thought it had been proven that Jesus was actually born in the spring?
