So what we're saying is, with that vent that seems to be the cause of this issue, not only does the AMD reference cooler not actually cool as well as we'd like, but it also doesn't totally do the 'blower' thing of exhausting all the hot air out the back of the PC?

Did you try blocking the side vent up on the cards?

On a side note (as I doubt it'd help with this), I wonder if changing the thermal paste would help temperatures much?

I did try blocking it with tape and it made no difference. The side of the case was cooler, but temps were identical so i decided to unblock it. I'm trying to remember if my reference 7970 had that vent, i think it might have.

I have ordered some Gelid Extreme.

I ordered the paste after i saw this article on Toms. They saw a few C lower temps and even lower power usage which was interesting.

Doesn't seem ideal in a blower cooler to me.

Am I right in saying that with OcUK I can remove the cooler on a Sapphire card without voiding warranty?

Correct so long as you don't damage the card, you'll be fine.

I wonder if its there because there is a vrm just below it. It definitely didn't decrease gpu temps by covering both holes up with sellotape though.

That probably is why.
I guess it doesn't make any real difference because the rear vent is right next to it and the air just fully exits that way if you seal up the side vent.

Question Matt, are your temps the same if your case side is off or are they better?

If they're better with the case off, there must be something you can do to optimize.. Let's think, what else do you do on the 25th of December.

Not tried that. The problem is though i have the pc on my desk, close to me. I drink and eat near it. Having the side of the case off is a bad idea. I'll end up sneezing on the motherboard or something lol. I'm pretty happy with the temps/fan profile i have now, but as always its nice to keep tweaking and see what can be done. I think my temps are pretty good considering the fan speed is only 50-60% and my case is not known for its good gpu cooling. If i only had one card my temps would be much lower, but having two Hawaii's in a 600t is not so easy to manage.If the side of my case was a bit further away from the gpu's i think it would help a lot. Regret buying this case and wish id gone for a full tower tbh.
