Redbull & other energy drinks are they bad for you ??

Energy drinks on their own are not good for you for reasons described in higher posts. Sugar, caffeine and taurine are unhealthy used frequently. It is even worse to combine energy drinks with alcohol. One is central nervous system depressant where the other is stimulant. Quite harmfull for the cardiovascular system. At least that was described in the case studies I've read in uni 5-6 years ago. Not checked any of the newer research into the topic.

It's not harmful to combine stimulants with depressants in general, often CNS depressants have no effect on the cardiovascular system anyway.

The only real hazard is when high doses of both are used and one drug has a much shorter/longer duration of action than the other, if the stimulants wears off before the depressant it could result in dangerous CNS depression.

While it's clear that he knows less than nothing about caffeine, he is right on that point. Caffeine is a neurotoxin to humans (and very many other animals). If you drank 60 pints of strong coffee within a couple of hours without urinating, you would probably die from caffeine poisoning. It is a neurotoxin, strictly speaking, but it's not dangerous to humans because of the dose required for any serious harmful effect. You could overdose with caffeine tablets (but it would be very difficult - the LD50 for an average adult human would be in the region of 250 tablets) or if you somehow managed to obtain pure caffeine (LD50 for an average adult human would be about a teaspoon).

That's clearly outside the context of this thread though, and also depends on your definition of "neurotoxin". Nicotine is incredibly toxic to humans, but it wouldn't be correct to start spouting that it's neurotoxic in a thread about smoking.

You may be right. Once again, did not do much researching. On the topic of energy drink abuse though, there are deaths reported when people had them before heavy exercise. I guess it could be one if those statistics like cannabis deaths. I've yet to see proof :)

I usually have a few cans to get me through a 'busy' day, though I've told myself I'll stop at NY. Too much added crap in them.

I don't really like coffee though, maybe I'll have to learn to like it?

What is peoples opinion on something like pro-plus vs red bull?

Let's be honest, a thread on smoking here never gets beyond a handful of pious so-and-sos telling smokers they're scum of the Earth and should be murdered now so that they are deprived the chance of killing themselves from lung cancer blah blah blah. ;)

You know why energy drinks give you "energy"? Because they are loaded with caffeine.
Caffeine is a neurotoxin, it's natures pesticide to detract predators from eating the plant.
When you consume caffeine it attacks your body, what does your body do when it's in danger? It releases adrenaline.

That's how they make their money, because energy drinks actually make you more tired from adrenaline burn out so you have to buy another.

Plus how many chemicals on the ingredients do you actually recognize? Don't put things in your body if you don't know what they are.

If you need fast cheap energy drink a cup of water with organic sugar.

Everything in moderation is a BS excuse. One person’s moderation is another’s gluttony. Red bull is a man made product that is far removed from any natural state, that does not feed, nourish or cleanse the body, and is designed by the industry to be addictive. Such things are just best left alone.

Get educated or get medicated. :)

lol what a load of BS

You won't have to (assuming you can, which seems like a tall order). Besides, you have to make coffee and that means it's not a direct replacement. You can get self-heating cans of pre-made coffee, but they're not very nice.

I wouldn't have either. There are much cheaper alternatives, especially for caffeine pills because they're generic. I bought some today. Pro Plus was £1 for 12 pills. Right next to it was some generic ones called Energy Kick. They were £1 for 40 pills. The ingredients were identical.

There's 27g of sugar in a 250ml can of standard Red Bull. Caffeine pills usually contain either no sweeteners or very small amounts, less than 1% of the amount in a 250ml can of Red Bull.

Caffeine pills are usually just caffeine, perhaps a liitle sugar and the rest is inert filler to make the pill big enough to handle conveniently. Red Bull has various other ingredients as well - glucuronolactone, taurine and some vitamins.

I prefer caffeine pills and water because I can't be bothered to trawl through studies to find out what glucuronolactone and taurine actually do :)

I've never seen the appeal of them personally. If you feel like you need one (or several) to get you through your days then it suggests to me that there are other issues i.e. your diet, amount of sleep, activity etc.

It does seem to have become fashionable in the last couple of years to "need" a Red Bull or Monster or whatever to get through their day (whether they actually need it or not), it's rather odd.

Honestly I think it's more placebo than anything else anyway, I've taken caffeine pills of up to 500mg at once and they didn't have any effect. Caffeine in no way can be considered a "proper" stimulant.

glucuronolactone, taurine and some vitamins.

My opinion on the matter is, if EFSA deem them safe, then they're safe

http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/press/news/ans090212.htm

I find Europe is in good hands with EFSA, and their protocols on ingredients, food labelling, food benefit claims are all in the interest of the consumer and only the consumer. it is in my opinion, the best in the world.

Caffeine is an adenosine agonist and its effects have been widely studied and are at least partially understood. The effect is chemical, although there's almost certainly a placebo effect as well.

If 500mg of caffeine had no effect on you at all, you are unusual. The effect can vary from person to person, but taking more than the recommended maximum daily dose in one go and feeling no effect at all is not to be expected.

Caffeine can stimulate you to death, so it can be considered a proper stimulant. Far milder than some, of course, and the usual doses of caffeine taken have a minor effect, but it genuinely is a stimulant.

They taste disgusting anyway. I can't understand why anyone would want to drink one in the first place.

There are some that taste normal and given the wide variety of flavours there's almost certainly at least one that you wouldn't find disgusting.

Red Bull itself makes me think of drinking perfume. If I was given a choice between drinking Red Bull and drinking my own pee, I'd have to think about which to choose.

I'm not disputing it's stimulant psychopharmacology (it's actually an adenosine antagonist btw). But most of what people put down to caffeine is more likely to be the placebo effect, the clinical studies on the effects of caffeine don't really support peoples assertions of the effects it has on them. Even ephedrine which is not a particularly strong stimulant either produces a more pronounced psychoactive effect than caffeine.
