Much real difference between Samsung 840 Pro & 840 EVO?

Apart from the extra 6GB on the Pro and the different Controller is there any noticeable difference between these two drives?

The reason I ask is the EVO is a lot cheaper.

Can't remember the exact details but IIRC the Pro is faster at handling certain types of data but overall there isn't much in it. The EVO uses TLC v MLC on the pro IIRC which has different advantages/disadvantages and costs associated with it.

the pro is nice and snappy but too expensive imo,i managed to nab mine when a deal was on

also have the non pro/evo basic 840 and that's decent,but the pro feels the snappiest out of the two and feels better than my corsair force gt

havn't tried an evo but for the money its the best bet I reckon,very minor niggles I doubt you'd be able to tell any diff

I have the 840 EVO and pretty happy with it, generally its pretty similiar real world use to the pro as far as I can tell though some specific situations possibly not quite as snappy as the Pro and some other high end SSDs I've used but on the flipside seems to do better in other areas.

I got the EVO on one of gibbo's silly deals so it was a no brainer - if I was paying regular price I'd have given it a bit more thought but now having used it I'd buy it again.

I will be selling my 128GB 830 and I have an old Crucial 128GB M225 ssd so it will help towards which ever one I decide.

I got a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive for £119, an absolute steal just could not refuse at that price.

I`ve owned an Intel X25-m 80gb, an Samsung 840 250gb and now an 840 Evo 250gb. I`ve also installed a lot of these SSDs (including a fair few Crucial M4s and Samsung 830s). I have never used an 840 Pro, but I'd be suprised if there's much difference, because all the SSDs that I have used are fast, and there's not a lot of difference between them. Yes, the Intel was slighlty slower. All the other ripped (especially when installed in a decent PC/Laptop).

HDD vs SSD ? SSD makes a massive difference.

SSD X vs SSD Y doesn't make much difference.

OK, certain SSDs may boot up a second or two (if you are lucky) faster. And maybe there's a reasonable difference in certain situations. Overall, any modern SSD will perform well, and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between them in everyday use.

Thank you for this but as I need more storage space as 128GB is not enough I am wanting an upgrade. I think I will see a little improvement over my 830 but if not then I'm not all that fussed as its the space I need more than anything.

I've the EVO and it's plenty quick enough. I think the difference is like a car than can do 200mph and a car than can do 208mph

I was just pointing out that if you were concerend about any performance difference, then you needn't be.

The 250GB EVO is a good choice. You may notice a slight improvement, but I doubt it will be massive, and I suspect that you'll soon forget the difference and probably think you are still using the 830, but with extra capacity.
