Offered a job in Singapore, undecided what to do

UK or this

If this is an actual real job offer, as it seems a bit dubious coming from Linkedin without meeting face to face, then you should 100% go.

I've been to Asia and loved it. Also an engineer friend of mine went to Singapore for 6 months for work. He's now in Australia so Im sure he's having lots of fun.

What's the worst thing that can happen? You hate it and come back after a year. :)

LinkedIn is packed with recruiters. I don't see why the job offer wouldn't be legit. I'm a software developer and I get tonnes of people harassing me on there.

If it's a genuine offer then you should go for it.

I very much doubt that you'd miss London and the UK enough to want to come back immediately. The world is a pretty big place and seeing more of it, whilst being paid, is no bad thing.

I had and created a thread on the exact same decision when I got offered a job in Sydney. I remember receiving exactly the same responses.

I went, and absolutely loved it. Ended up there for 2.5 years.

Do it. Singapore is a great city.

how heart breaking that you would have to sell both cars... lol

Go for a year if its crap come back....

Singapore is a hell of a place too for a rich young man... have fun.

Do it if legit. But be aware that the working hours will be very long.

That would be my only reservation. Working in Sydney was work hard, play hard, but with a nice work/life balance. The guys over in Singapore at our place do ridiculous amounts of hours but I suppose it depends on the job.

I'd go, it sounds an epic place. But do it with your eyes open. I've heard the work ethic is quit different so don't think you will have an easy 37 hour week :p Go for the experience, not the money.

A chap I went to Uni with did 2 years out there on ~ quadruple his UK salary, and had grand visions of returning with 100k in savings for a house deposit etc. I think he underestimated how much it actually costs to live out there as he had pretty much nothing upon returning.

go for it - doesn't have to be perm - you could always come back in a couple of years - you might well find that you like the experience, make new contacts, discover new opportunities etc...

and on the plus side - eurasian girls are hot and there are a few of them in Singapore.... :D

I've heard amazing things about working over there, and there are a hell of a lot of English folk too so you'll find more friends in no time - do it :)

Definitely go mate, if you dont..it will be a case of what if etc.

If it doesnt work out then come back here but pretty sure once you are out there, you will love it.

I loved Singpore when i was there for a few days on a stopover on my honeymoon, its a lovely place with great people and awesome food. Bit too humid for my liking though but still if i could get a job out there, id be outta here sharp-ish.

I've recently got back from a trip to Malaysia & Singapore, I met up with a colleague who moved there 6 months ago to start up an office due to us expanding our client base massively out in Asia and if I wasn't with my girlfriend and had the opportunity to work there for a bit I would definitely take it.

There is a large ex-pat community there and English is the official language so you won't feel massively overwhelmed by Asian culture if you're worried about that. It's incredibly clean, the metro is very efficient and a much nicer place to be than the Tube, you'll get used to the heat quite quickly - you just learn to not going strolling around at mid-day etc.

The only two downsides for me would be:

• The food - I really like Asian food, there is a great food culture there (not on a par with London but it seems to be really taking off) but you will miss Western food, my colleague seems to find it quite difficult to find a decent sandwich for instance :)

• Cars. Just going by your signature this might also be a big issue for you. I spent my entire time there rubber necking as there is a ridiculous amount of beautiful cars (and girls ;)), especially modified JDM stuff...but you probably won't be able to afford one yourself. Cost of car ownership is incredibly high there, with a very complicated system that involves you paying thousands just for the ticket to be allowed to own a car, before you even get in to the huge tax laid on the purchase prices. Of course I don't know what your salary bracket would be - this may not be an issue at all.

Other than that I would quite happily live there for a year or two, maybe longer depending on how it went. Rent, food etc. works out to be about as expensive as London but you'll make massive savings on income tax so it's a financially sound move too.
