Superflower 1300w psu problems :(

Hi,

So I have the superflower 1300w set up in my machine with 3 new r290 cards.
I left it on last night and woke up to a screaming sound coming from my PC. I ran into the office and turned it off. I thought perhaps one of the graphics cards had a problem with the fan, so I took them out one by one and tried each individually, no problems at all.

Then i'm sat, literally browsing overclockers looking for some watercooling solutions when it goes off screaming again. It sounded a little like a pop (kind of like a release of pressure), then a screaming which sounded like a high pitched "psch-choooooooooooo" sound which then continued. My partner in the other room described it as similar to a banshee screaming.

I listened this time for a moment before turning it off, and it's coming from the new PSU. I restarted it, and now it sounds like the fan is grating, I imagine how it would sound if a wire was stuck in it. The fan keeps starting and stopping by the sound of it, after watching a video on here before I expected that to be normal.

I changed the setting from "eco" to "auto" and it is now making the grating noise which it wasn't before.

I'll post up a video, but any ideas?

Perhaps this has to go back, but i'm so so so hacked off about it if it does as I bought it as a quality power supply wanting nothing to go wrong, i'm rather shocked, given how high quality they are meant to be.

Video coming, and I don't know if it's safe to use anymore... hmm.

Doesn't sound good, in whatever mode it is in it shouldn't be making any sort of noise like that :S

Best thing to do is contact OcUK or whomever you bought it from and return it - either get a refund or a replacement, but I guess it's a very small chance that you'll get yourself a faulty unit, just you have.

Yeah sounds like an RMA, suprised in all honesty but there is always a miniscule chance that any component is faulty, i recently bought a Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z87 and have just had to RMA it as it was DOA.

Wow, that's an incredible noise. Definitely RMA/supplier, should really not be doing that.

Haha, yes.. "Wow" is what I thought this morning. I don't think the "Banshee" description from my partner was far off.

I'm so gutted that my system will be down for a few days because of the faulty PSU :(.

Think there is any chance they could send me a new one whilst I send it back? It's so blatantly broken.

I took it out of the case a little and turned it the other way up so I could see the fan, it kind of moves a little in bursts, each time it moves causing the "grinding" noise, until it eventually stops for about 30 seconds,.. then... pst-CHOOOOOOOOO

it actually sounds like a corsair gs series version 1 i had, it was making that noise and the clicking noise as the fan was trying to spin but not as loud as that!
it was a known problem with the series 1 and then the new 2013 they fixed the problem which was something to do with the fan controller

Perhaps if I ask nicely I can avoid sending back all of the cables and asking for an RMA without the cables etc, since it is modular maybe there is no need, i'm hoping I don't have to re-do all of the wires etc. It's the second PSU which i've had die on me in a month, so I'm kind of fed up of waiting in for deliveries, waiting in to send back, and re-wiring things :(.
