Failure rates of Hardware in 2013 - GPU's

Well I clicked on the Gaming systems and they use Asus and EVGA of nVidia and for AMD they use Asus, MSI, XFX and Sapphire. That does narrow it down a fair chunk.

Didn't I see Sapphire in there somewhere being higher? That does surprise me, but I've not used them for a good few years: EDIT - thinking of something else I read, ignore.

My OCZ Vertex 4s are doing just fine. Life for OCZ carries on as Toshiba have agreed to purchase them:

http://ir.ocz.com/news/detail/3014/...oration-to-acquire-solid-state-drive-business

Vertex 4s are decent drives as they use the Everest 2 NAND controller. Vertex 3 firmware updates fixed a lot of issues but they took to long to dump Sandforce.

Sapphire don't have the best track record either.

Don't they? Dunno, the last Sapphire card i had was a 6950, nothing wrong with it, good card other than the fact that mine would not unlock to a 6970

I felt cheated, how dare they deprive me of paying for a 6950 and getting a 6970! its just not cricket.

Whatever happened to BFG.

Edit:

In August 2010, BFG began the process of liquidation, initially only for the GPU business but eventually expanding to include the entire company. As a result of this, BFG ceased to honor RMA

Ah.

I think Sapphire were at one point the AMD card to go for. I always remember when the 5870 was suffering from chronic PowerPlay throttling issues, which was inherently a hardware level fault. Where AMD fell silent on it for essentially the entire life time of the cards, Sapphire released a BIOS fix/work around.

So basically, I loved them.

Maybe I am being harsh but I recall plenty of threads with Sapphire issues and then problems with RMA as well. XFX are just the pits though and I would advise anyone to avoid them.

Their lifetime warranty killed them. People abused (rightly or wrongly) that system and it cost them into bankruptcy. They are all mainly with KFA2 now, so when my BFG 8800GT does eventually die, I am sending it to them :p

Interesting thread, the relatively high AMD failure rate is particularly alarming but not much of a shock given the amount of R2** series problems I've seen people having on this forum alone. Also, I recall a brief period in 2013 where MSI had serious issues with 7950s I think.

LOL.

I had two 7900GTXs which were BFG. They didn't fail, but they caused my Enermax Liberty to leave shrapnel in the wall behind my desk.

Sapphire reported a defect with their 7870s way back in 2012, it also unofficially applied to the 7850. The problem was the card would black screen and sound loop after a gaming period of 30 mins to an hour. This was linked to a faulty capacitor which was sorted.

Other cards that this fault affected included in particular Gigabyte,
and some asus and other cards powercolor etc etc.

Power Colour.

Yes, we won't say any more. :D

Actually I will as there products aren't bad, they've just never really released anything worth buying.

If I were Kingston, I'd be posting this **** everywhere :D.

Lucky you didn't have your PC facing away from you like mine is atm! (I've been needing easy access to swapping cables for monitors lol)

Tis why I felt the need to add as their ref cards are most likely fine! They just never release anything worth a look in besides that.

Yeah they are cheapily made and the price reflects that too, But they are also underrated in a way that people don't realise what they actually make besides reference cards.
For example this is my 7950 it cost £210 when other 7950s were hitting £230-250 http://www.powercolor.com/us/products_features.asp?id=455

The cooler although flimsy actually is pretty quiet and cools the gpu lovely.
But for seious overclocking these cards struggle to get past 1200.

Surely can't be basing the xfx figures from completed rma's then :p

Though I may be right in saying the yanks get far better treatment from xfx then Europeans do.

I think there is probably some truth in that, XFX GPU's seem to be quite popular in the US.

Who knows why, having said that there does seem to be an XFX fan base in the UK, they sell well at other e-tailers, maybe because they are relatively cheap and most pepole don't know about the RMA issues, or the cheap components they use.

Yet the 290X DP looks like an ok bit of kit.
