I have been reading up a little on SSDs for my laptop.

out of the following which would be better?

Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA

or

Intel 530 Series 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (SSDSC2BW120A401)

I know the Samsungs have been getting good feedback on here, and the fact the Intel drive uses the MLC memory; which in the long run has a shorter life span from what I have read. The two drives are similar prices (I live in Japan)

Thanks

Tim

I have the Samsung drive that you have stated in your post and its brilliant I would
suggest you get that drive its really really good.

Worth checking warranty duration in your region.

Over here the Intel model comes with 5 years warranty, although I've seen 3 years also listed on different sites. While the Samsung is 3 years.

Probably not an issue as I imagine 120GB (111GB once formatted in Windows) and interface/speed will end up being replaced before 5 years.

The Samsung EVO uses TLC memory, which has a shorter lifespan. A lot has been made of this "shorter lifespan" by some who think that shorter = short, or that it means "unreliable".

So far, the EVOs (and the previous non-pro 840s that use TLC memory) have proved to be very reliable and have a lifespan much longer than most users will keep their SSDs.

Samsung. You won't need RMA.

You make a fair point.

I haven't yet RMA'd any of the dozens of Samsung SSDs that I`ve installed.

I have only ever bought one Intel SSD, which was RMA'd.

BTW The RMA process was OK. The faulty SSD was collected and delivered back to my door. It took about 10 days for the replacement to arrive.
