Is a GTX780 overkill?

The 780 has been out for too long to be worth considering. I think you should wait for Maxwell / AMD's next cards which will hopefully be out in March.

Crysis 1 isn't the only game that only uses 2 cores...

Name any new game that uses 2 cores now . A person buying a new card like a 780 is more bothered about playing new games and as we know all new games now use as many cores as available. It's pointless talking about such old games that people don't even play anymore.

Also an i5 2500k at 4.2ghz is more than enough for any single GPU on the market right now. He could overclock to a higher level and it will only benefit CPU limited games by a few frames more and in most cases give an extra 1fps-2fps to any GPU limited games. I have a i7 2600k at 4.8ghz and to be honest with you even at stock to 4.8ghz I tested some games at the time and it gave me anything from 1 to 5 frames more on intensive games that were doing about 30-40fps at stock CPU. So them few frames more are not even here or there in the real world.

Was trying to find a new version of this test they did below on legionhardware.com, check the Core i7 & i5 results and clocks they used 3.6ghz to 4ghz makes hardly any difference.

You'll need more clock speed on your 2500k.... At least 4.6Ghz

I only run my 3930k @4.0 gaming with 4 Titans lol.

Most of the time if people have to run at speeds higher than this it has more to do with multi player games or rubbish software like Crysis, neither of which has anything to do with GPUs.

Have you got a project log or anything Kaap? I'm blown away by your array of GPU power, what the hell are you doing with it all?

Nice to see you on here, Purgatory. :)

Thanks mate nice to see you're still about on the forums :), happy new year.

Kaapstad exactly :D. Crysis 1 is so badly coded it shouldn't even be used for benchmarks and especially a game that is now 7 years old. I only have my CPU at 4.8ghz because I do a lot of video encoding and I get a nice little benefit from such an overclock, if I was only gaming I would probably just leave it at stock with the GTX 580 I have, can't wait to get the 780TI and do stock and overclock CPU testing again to see if the difference is worth it with such a new GPU and of course will try overclock the GPU too and see if the CPU overclock makes a real world difference.

I ran SLi 780's with a 4.5Ghz 2500k and it worked every bit as well as my current 4770k system with both GPU's being utilised fully at 1440p.

Tbh going from the 2500k to 4770k was a waste of money for me gaming wise.

If you are using a single 1080p screen a 780 and 2500K will serve you very well.

Is a GTX780 overkill for the below system. The i5 2500k is clocked at 4.2. I have the upgrade bug and fancy a new GPU.

I would be very confortable upgrading from a GTX 580 to a GTX 780. Even with your i5, you will be fine.

And like Kaapstad mentionned, I can also run every games I want at 8044x1440 with my whole system at stock. i7 3930k at 3.8Ghz, memory at 1333mhz and my Quad R9 290x and everything is maxed out.

I thought about upgrading from a 470 to a 780 ti to game at 1080p. I am wondering through if the ti is really worth the premium for that resolution and to stick to a 780. I do like everything cranked up on max though and looking pretty! I'm also running an i5 760.

The 780 will do you just fine. Especially if you give it some juice and OC it ;)

If you are planning to play at 1080p and 60 hz (fps), a GTX 780 (non-ti) will be more than enough for the next year or two.
