LG 47LA660V - My first impressions

Converted one of the files to avi with Handbrake and it plays fine. Maybe my mkv files are just dodgy. I'll do another check for software updates and check if other mkv files work.

Ok. Further to my little streaming and TV disconnecting issue..

The history:

Got TV. Linked it all up to wireless network. It works. Added Plex media server to my PC. Added music and video libraries. TV found said libraries. Started to watch a movie. Great.. 1 hour 50 mins (estimated) TV lost connection. Rebooted TV. Started movie again and fast forwarded it to where I was. Played fine for the rest of the movie (15 mins). Tried again with other movie. Disconnection again. Purchased a switch box for the network cables and wired the TV into my network. TV was faster. Started a film. TV disconnected after 10 mins. I cried.

Fast forward to yesterday.

My mate at work gave me his old router, a bit newer than mine. A Belkin N1 wireless router. I installed it. Booted my PC up. Started Plex and it automatically updated to newest version. Turned on TV and that auto updated to newer version. I tried a movie streamed via Plex on my PC (Die Hard. Missus never seen it before) the movie played in its entirety with out a disconnection..

Now the big question is..... was it the router? was it the TV? or was it the Plex media server that caused the TV rage quitting? I may never know. I updated all 3 within a matter of an hour and it all seems to work.

Just thought I would share this with you all :-)

Happy bunny here

What does the MVC bit relate to? I've watched 3D .mkv files on the set without issue (half side-by-side), but no idea if they are in the same format you are talking about.

Technically those are not 3D. It just a standard 2D video where the left and right eyes are playing side by side (or over and under). They can be played on anything, but it's the TV which turns it into a 3D image when you press the 3D button on the remote.

MVC is true 3D (like found on a 3d bluray). It is a standard 2D movie, but within the file is a hidden MVC track which contains all the delta differences between the left and right eyes. The TV picks this up and automatically displays it in 3D (framepacking).

I'd heard mixed reports on the LG being able to play it. My friend has an LG TV (cant remember the model). He's tried one, and the TV plays the video fine in 2D. When you press the 3D button, the framepacking option is coloured so it sounds like the TV has seen the MVC track, but he said the 3D looks funny. I'm not sure if it's actually working or not.

If anyone has a 3d bluray, and a bluray player in their PC i'll happily help them in making the file. Unfortunately it's not something I can upload as they average at around 35gb each.

They are my preffered choice as they contain totally uncompressed video and HD audio (bit for bit copy of a bluray).

Guys

One last post on this, if you are using the Plex server on your PC/MAC/NAS/SERVER then you need to follow this guys, he is writing a native Plex app for the LG TVs that came without it.

http://plex.h3consulting.net/

This not the smart share app that is in built. Works very similar to XBMC.

So I tried a different mkv file and some mp4 files and they worked fine via Plex. Guess I just had some dodgy mkv files!
Oh and I just select Plex as an available input, and browse through it like a USB drive.

Yeah, that's what I do. The "proper" Plex app is coming along quite nicely, but it's still not quite as snappy or as accessible as just browsing from the inputs list. You still get cover art, and I'm not too bothered about the lack of descriptions.

When/if it get's submitted to the LG store rather than having to run it off a USB stick, that might change.

Does anyone else find the Smart TV features are a bit slow in operation?
Generally seems a little sluggish, using the browser is like wading through treacle and the Youtube app is painful to use (the in-built search is absolute **** and impossible to use). iPlayer seems to be the only 'app' that is reasonably smooth to use (until the OSD comes on whilst watching something).

And am i right in thinking 4.22.11 is currently the latest version?

Really impressed with the TV otherwise; PQ is pretty decent and audio isn't too bad for a flat-TV (heard a lot, lot worse).

Mine was freezing the other day, but had a firmware update on the weekend and it's seemed to have sorted itself out.

Maccy, what firmware version are you running?

Might do a reset and see if that improves it a little.

On another note, did everyone else's come with a built-in SAT tuner with CAM slot? I thought this was limited to EU versions of the TV (did purchase from Curry's) only

That's interesting, I'd noticed the LNB/SAT connector on the back of mine and was surprised to see it there as nowhere mentioned it had a Freesat tuner built in.

Mine too was from Curry's, haven't had a chance to hook up one of the leads from my Sky box to see what actually happens as it's a pain to reroute to the TV, so would be curious if anyone else could try it out to see what (if anything) it picks up.

Yup mine did as well, fired in the sat feed cable and freesat HD is there, also you can control moveable dishes etc..

Will be something I am going to look into pretty soon.

ok so for anyone wondering, it seems this TV DOESN'T support 3d mvc from an mkv file

for those wanting that format, looks like the mede8er 600x3d media player is the one. Personally I have a very fast computer and decided to convert them all to sbs. Obviously they won't be full hd, or contain hd audio but i can live with that

I just got a LG 50 inch and all is well. The only two things I don't like is the smart share setup(a bit basic) and what it looks like.

IE in the is video at 0.28 you see 3 screens smart share but I only get one :(

Yeah I see that too. Maybe it was an earlier release as the video was dated last year. I liked that 3 screen look as the one now is basic, works but basic.

I have the 50LA620V and yeh basic it what it is. I've used thumbgen on the movie folder
but I now see that smart share ant so smart :D but the android app is very good.
