TV For next gen consoles?

Genuine question - would any of you consider a 40" LED LCD as a PC monitor? It just seems the best bang for buck (for example that Sony W6 goes from £370 to £500 - seems a nice jump for the sake of £130)...

It would primarily depend on how far away you sit from it and then how good your sight is. Sounds like trouble to me though, my eye strain is bad enough on normal sized screens.

That Sony suggestion looks really good though. I'm still rocking this bad boy from 2005. Yeh, that's a 2" bevel with fully authentic plastic grey.. and what..

I think you'll probably struggle to find a plasma (in the US at least) anything under 50" this day and age. The smallest you could get prior was 42", but I've not seen a 42" in quite some time. So if size is an issue, you may only have LCD as an option.

I personally prefer Plasma over LCD any day of the week, simply because an LCD suffers with moving pictures. Yes its extremely sharp otherwise, but you'll start to pick holes at it once it starts trying to move fast. So the manufacturers started adding digital trickery, in way of doubling up on the hz. TV's by default (in the US) are 60hz. To eliminate judder and motion blur thats prevalent on LCD's, they added 120hz. However 120hz, is a bit weird in itself, especially as movies are shot in 24fps. It makes them glide, which alters the feel of a movie. Makes it feel like a 60fps soap rather than a 24fps movie. I personally do not like what it does, as I'm sure many a movie buff doesn't either. Yes its great for sports and so on, but where its not great is gaming. You'll notice a very slight delay. Maybe not at first, but play a game where super fast response is needed, such as a fighting game or fps, and its there alright. If you're going with a 32" then motion blur and judder will not be so obvious. Just turn off most of the digital trickery and it'll be fine. 40" is the minimum you should really go for. 32" is like a kids tv this day and age. and we're talking toddler here. I tried to palm one off on my 2yr old when he was 2.. By the time he was 5, he was complaining that his tv was too small.... Good excuse to buy myself a Panasonic GT30 55" i said to myself, and move the 50" GT25 to the bedroom.. and he got my Panasonic G10 THX in his room for his ps3.... Not bad going for a 5 yr old.

My main issue with LCD's is without all the motion smoothing enabled which makes movement look weird then they only have around 300 lines motion resolution, where's a plasma will have the full 1080 lines of motion resolution without any motion smoothing enabled.

Yeah, a fair few people are stuck in the past in regards to lcds and gaming. Some of the current crop of high to mid range end leds are very decent - the Sony W9 being just about the best panel you can currently.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I am now also looking for a new TV and very much like the Sony KDL42W653.

Currently have the XB1, but considering a PS4. The jaggy edges on XB1 on BF4 are really ****ing me off and I've heard it's much better on the PS4?

In any case, my current TV is horribly outdated and small haha, so anyone who has the KDL42W653, or if the OP went with this choice, what's it like?

Cheers!

Yeah the PS4 version runs at higher resolution so the image will be clearer with less aliasing. KDL42W653 is probably what i would buy if I were buying a new TV now

I have the bigger KDL50W656 and couldn't be happier. I (personally) don't see any ghosting or banding and it is a beautiful picture.

I've gone for a PANASONIC VIERA TX-L32E6B, LED TV, Wii U games look amazing on it, decent quality sound too.

A lot of people recommending panasonic plasma but at the OP's budget the only plasma they could afford brand new would be the ST series which is awful for input lagg therefore awful for gaming. Unless of course your recommending they buy the bottom of the range x60B which is only 720P?

Therefore they would need to get a samsung, up their budget for a GT60 or buy second hand. Out of those choices and spending £500, I would either increase the budget or get a Samsung, I wouldn't want to spend £500 on a second hand tv, I would spend £300-£400 maximum which would only stretch to a GT30 I imagine which compared to today's £500 tv's isn't that good, so second hand is not an option at this price range. If they had a lower budget then it would be.

Otherwise my first choice in the LCD camp would be a 2013 sony panel and my second choice in the LCD camp would be a 2013 panasonic panel.

If I had to make list in order of preference it would be;

GT60 (over budget)
F8500 (over budget)
Sony 2013 LCD
Lower series F range Samsung Plasmas
Panasonic 2013 LCD

I have the KDL42W653, bought it last week, and its a great all-round TV. I never really noticed input lag with my old Samsung but when i started gaming on the Sony, I'm certain I had some on my old TV.

Picture is great, once I turned off the stupid auto dimmer setting in ECO, far too dark a picture all the time, and the sound isn't that bad if I were to ever stick a USB stick in to watch a video.

I like mine.

I've had the KDL42W653 since getting a PS4 and it's a great TV, with it's really low input lag you can't notice any at all and the picture is solid with it being a VA panel, blacks are really good and colours are great with a little tweaking.

LED tv's do not exist they are LCD with LED backlighting.

Plasma's handle motion a lot better and up until this year had better input lagg (sony lcd's have best input lagg now from 2013 panels only).

There are advantages and disadvantages of both which some people just seem to never look at.

Plasma - cheaper, bigger, better picture quality, better motion handling and low input lagg

LCD's - no image retention issues, no reflection issues, extremely low input lagg on sony 2013 models only (otherwise plasma is usually lower).

Do Plasma screens still have a problem with screen burn?

screen burn became non existent many years ago, image retention however is still there and if you follow certain procedures it should never become a real issue.

run the tv in for the first 200-400 hours with normal useage, do not game for longer than 60 minutes a session in this time if the game has static images, etc.

use the scrolling bar after every session with a static image to look for image retention, if there is some, leave the scrolling bar running for a couple of hours, if not then continue as normal.

keep static images and black bars to a minimum or avoid completely whilst the panel is new is best.

the longer you run in the panel (use it) the more resistant it becomes to image retention, so the more the tv has varied use the more resistant they become and therefore less of an issue retention becomes.

I tried a TX-L32E6B the black levels were terrible due to pretty much a full coverage of backlight bleed, it also kept making obscenely loud cracking noises as it warmed up due to the frame expanding etc.

I also tried KDL32W653 and the black levels were a lot better due to the VA panel but it had backlight dimming on dark scenes which was as annoying as the severe backlight bleed on the E6B. Two sides of the same coin I guess.

I finally upped the ante and got a 42GT60 plasma which is amazing, my only criticism is that it's so good that I daren't use it too much for standard TV as I want it to last forever. (okay until 4k OLED anyway :p)

I'd have to chime in with the KDL42W653 recommendation, never been a fan of Sony Tv's but it surpassed all of my expectations, it's such a good panel.

Got a sony kdl55w905 and the ps4 is a thing of wonder on it. 40" version available.

Im in the same situation - 2407 is dying and I need to replace it - was thinking 32" but they seem so small so considering 40" now.

ps3ud0

Going from a 40" to 32" might not be a bad idea depending on how far away from the TV you sit. In my bedroom(where I game) I was using a 37" TV and downsized to a 32" and I now prefer the 32". I only sit about 5" away from my TV so with a smaller TV it's easier to see the whole screen at once, with the 37" I'd actually have to move my head a bit to see from one side to the other.
