Diesel or Petrol?

We want to sell our LS430 and get a Range Rover Vogue SE, however we are trying to cost up the price differences in running costs.

Both will be the V8 around the 06-07 mark.

Our commute is usually 10 miles A roads and 10 miles motorway. ATM in the LS430 we average 24 MPG.

I am guessing the petrol Range Rover is going to do around 18mpg? And the diesel equivalent is going to do 25 mpg from what I can see on the forums.

We do 15k a year so that is

Petrol - £4887.05
Diesel - £3791.44

Thats roughly a £1000 saving, however my main concern is maintenace on the diesel. I can repair most things but 2 turbos around £1500 isn't cheap even if I am repairing it.

No one on here likes diesels, you'll get a biased answer. :D

You are not going to rack up a £1000 quid of repairs every year just because it's a diesel and OMG turbo, OMG injectors..

Buy the diesel

Your main worry is Range Rover.. OMG Suspension, OMG Gearbox, OMG Electrics ;) :D

The TDV6 looks your best bet regarding depreciation.

The TD6 is a inline 6 bmw engine no? It's not a v6 I don't think.

That engine is too slow for me. I can't really do 0-60 in 13 seconds...

They all seem to have pretty similar depreciation after the first few years though? (he's not buying new)

edit: actually, the petrol has the smallest depreciation in the final year of that graph

Looking at the prices of the year you're after you could get the petrol for a bit cheaper anyway, which would offset some of the fuel costs. As well as the fact that it would sound better + go better, seems like the best choice to me.

There is a certain satisfaction from driving all the way to the tip of Cornwall and all the way back home again on one tank. ;)

You try that in a Petrol and you'll run out by Truro :D

TDV6 is a V6 Code name Lion. (2.7L -190 hp / 320 lb/ft or 3.0L - 271 hp / 440 lb/ft)
TD6 is the inline BMW 6 174 bhp / 288 lb/ft

I wouldn't touch the TD6. It's like the poverty model. :D

What you looking for? A late L322?
If it were me it'd be the TDV8 every time.
270 hp / 470 lb/ft  enough
unless you went for the 2010 on TDV8 then it became 4.4L instead of 3.6..
330 hp / 516 lb/ft with 32 mpg combined.

Now we're talking. :D

I know my maths is shocking but....

A loss of £44,713 for the TDV6 diesel
A loss of £48,367 for the SDV8 diesel
A loss of £54,776 for the V8 S petrol

Get ready for US LEV160 and EU6c required PM sensors aswell :p

And the rest! (Especially for CARB OBD).

I would go with the V8 Diesel in an L322 Range Rover, as that's probably the most suitable engine for that car, however I would be worried about Diesel component costs as you are. But the whole car is going to be a potential bringer of big bills, so maybe the Diesel specific costs won't be that much relative I the whole common car parts? Will need to have a good warranty or a large pot set aside!

I assume the petrol you're looking at wouldn't be the 5.0 as that came in 2009.

Overall, the petrol has more depreciation, but the graph shows figures from new and the OP is buying a car a few years old.

From the final year of the graph:
TDV6 drops £5976 - a 15% drop
SDV8 drops £6524 - a 15% drop
V8 S drops £6703 - a 13% drop

So, although it depreciates more in the first couple of year, the V8 actually depreciates less if your buying an older car.

Diesels are great in a big engine. Worst part is the sound which a big, 2.5L+ engine will mask and depending on tech and refinements, sounds remarkably like a petrol!
