Motorola Moto G - new budget smartphone champion?

I've never used Nokia Drive, but surely Google Maps does all of this on Android? I've just got it to plot a route to Hull on public transport for example.

Google maps does indeed seem to do a reasonable job on public transport. I'll see if I can make this work for me. But I don't think it can match a dedicated satnav app for driving. Annoying that NavFree crashes the phone, that is very bad. The screen just goes blank, and then when you take a look it has simply switched off, and you have to power it on again and watch it go through the welcome screens etc. I'll have to try another free satnav app perhaps, although by all accounts Navfree is the best one.

Have you tried Google nav for driving enough time to get a good feel for it? I have, and it works.

Not yet, I've played with it in terms of setting destinations etc, but not actual driving. The downside is that it uses your data allowance does it not, whereas NavFree and Nokia Drive do not, they just use GPS alone.

Looking to buy one of the Tesco £99 versions for the missus. Can anyone confirm that the phone works locked to Tesco but with a GiffGaff SIM?

Google Maps is all about being online and searching ...err Google! :D I wouldn't worry too much about data requirements, it's quite small and all nav apps use connectivity for traffic etc. (That's what owning a smartphone is all about anyway right?)

You can cache Google maps to some extent. Zoom to the map extent you want and search/say 'OK maps' or scroll to the bottom and select 'make this map area available offline' ...But it's rubbish and not suitable for general navigation.

OK, that may be alright in the UK, but not when roaming overseas. Last year I was in New Zealand and Thailand, and used the Nokia Drive app totally free with the maps for those countries. Worked a treat, I was quite surprised actually. However I will certainly try Google Maps for UK use. I doubt it will crash the phone like Navfree does.

Are the phones branded (hardware or software) with Tesco on them?

Not exactly, there is no visual difference between Tesco models and 'retail' models, but the Tesco ones do have Tesco specific software.

This actually appears to be a benefit for once, as the Tesco model got KitKat first!

The tesco rom only really has the voicemail button locked to tesco (ie when you press and hold 1) from what I've seen (I've flashed the stock rom) and even that isn't on all of them lol.

There's nothing different in real everyday usage though and I can't say I used 1 for voicemail anyway lol

It depends on what you need, when you need it. None of them are perfect. Google Maps with a data connection has so much more info/features than Nokia HERE but is utterly useless without one. Legacy satnav map providers like TomTom are terrible outside driving.

Try Intel's m8. That uses all TomTom services and will cache a wide area in case you loose connectivity, you'll need a network connection first but should be better than NavFree.

Thanks for the tips. I'll do some further research. Will Google Maps allow you to save and re-name your favourite destinations ?

I have to say, this phone is superb. Gorgeous screen, and the phone is fast and fluid. Incredible value for money. The mobile BBC website doesn't work too well, but the Sky News app and the MailOnline app work perfectly. Great job from Motorola.

Now I wonder how much better things can be when the KitKat update arrives !

You don't know that all Tesco phone have got it, it could just be some of them.
