Adopting a cat

Tbh you don't need to make him a fort all you need to do is leave a box somewhere with the flaps closed and he will find it and hide in it and feel comftable.

Tried this when I saw the first post mentioning it but he's having none of it. I folded the flaps down and shoved a blanket in it but he doesn't seem interested, I think he prefers hiding in the confines of the house for some reason.

My cat likes suitcases and laptop bags...go figure. :p

Just be careful and satisfy yourself that the owner is letting the cat go for a good reason.

Badly looked after cats can have behaviour problems such as peeing in (your) bedding, scratching doors/carpets etc and the older they are, the harder it is to cure this.

A box with flaps is not a cat fort.

This is a cat fort.

Yeah don't worry about it just leave it out. The last 2 cats I fostered hid for a month then they started to come out say hello and play etc but had no interest in boxes from the start. But by the time they got adopted they were in and out of the huge box I had in the hall, they loved it. You'd be sitting in the lounge and you would hear this flap or manic sounds if they got stuck lol.

That's the better of the two options, when they really trust you they'll plonk their furry bum on your face

What he said ^

Although my cat has definitely tried to smother me more than once!

absolutely to both. the black one will curl up next to/on your head at night. im sure he purposefully rubbed his bum down my cheek once or twice too

or its lay on the chest and bat the face with/without claws

Yup! I sleep on my side and my cat makes himself comfortable on my arm with his head resting on my shoulder and then proceeds to bat my face/nose with his paws. Awesome at 5am :p

its always 3-4am with our two. like clockwork

the black one also gets under the duvet and proceeds to take a layer of your arm skin off with his incredibly rough tongue :D

Murray jumps on me in the night and expects head / neck scratchy's and there was a time when I used to only 20% wake up and get on with it until that fateful night when I was scratching away 80% asleep when something in my deep buried dreamy conscious asked "where are this cats ears ?".

Yes the ****** had turned round and and I was happily scratching the damn cats arse at 4am!

Looks like you are doing the right things.

Cats will come to you when they are ready. The worst thing you can do is force yourself on them. They need to trust you and you cultivate this trust by leaving them alone so they know you are not a danger.

Eventually they will come out of their shell when they know they are safe. A new house is a scary place for a cat as they can smell and hear far more than you can perceive, so it is not just the visible physical environment they need to come to terms with, it is everything else too.

When we rescued ours, we just let them out of the pet carrier and left them to it. We made sure they had food, water, a bed and a litter tray and we let them have the run of the house. They were both very nervous but being brothers they took comfort in each other and were soon exploring and playing. We kept them in for 4 weeks before allowing them to venture out, and up until that point they had never been outside before. So it was a scary time for them and us!

They soon got comfortable with the house and us, it just takes a little time. Try and learn their personalities and insecurities. Our one cat refused to use a catflap for 2 years. Tried every which way to train him but he was having none of it. Then he went missing for a week or so. We were fearing the worst until one day he just came through the catflap like he had done it all his life. Now he uses it with no problems. Weird!

The other one is scared stiff of bin lorries. As soon as he hears one coming he will bolt for his spot under our bed and stay there for at least an hour.

If you try and handle him and show him there is nothing to be afraid of he gets very distressed. So we leave him to hide and he comes out when he is ready.

Just take it slow and let your cat learn to trust you

He will soon be using you as a radiator :)

Stages with mine, loving, then "ok, you get 20 minutes sleep" then it's single claw and he taps you on the head a few times "right, that's enough human, now feed me!"

This is why I shut my bedroom door nowadays.

heh, mine's still too scared to jump up on the bed at the moment and it's quite a high bed so he's taken to hiding underneath the comfy chair in my room.

I have 3 or 4 cats on my double bed at night. Sometimes I don't get enough duvet coverage or I have to lay in a weird position so I don't disturb them. Wife usually sleeps on the sofa as I sleep better (those Romans had the right idea)and I also snore a little bit as well.

From my experience (mum has 4 cats 3 rag dolls and one ragamuffin, always had 2-4 in house when growing up) it's best getting one cat.

All my mums cats either hate each other or don't give a sod about each other!

All my cats knock the crap out our only female cat. The youngest cat terrorises the older cats because he's got an inferiority complex.

In fact my cats like our dogs better than the other cats :/

My girlfriend has one cat (a Russian blue ) and he's happy as Larry on his bill.

We have all females an old pair got as a rescue pair and more recently got two female sister kittens they have all bonded much better than we thought and they are house cats (with a huge roof terrace).

I've found it is the sexes that don't get on, males like male cats, females (tolerate) other females.

I have a boy and girl cat, not litter mates but from the same rescue foster home.

They're not on top of each other close, but they get on just fine :)

Our boys are from two separate litters and get on fine. They play real rough sometimes but next minute they're snuggled up next to each other..
