new 290 again!

I've had black screens and red screens with my 290x and I can say for sure in my case it was all down to various gpu or cpu overclocking settings/voltages. I persevered with it (as didnt get any issues with everything at stock) and now with solid overclock settings have not had a blackscreen or redscreen in bf4 for over 6 weeks.

Swapping out for msi lightning soon hopefully! quieter, beefier and more OC headroom :)

Was in a hurry earlier so wasn't quite clear but I'm not saying its something that affects all 290s but its definitely a problem with some of them - found a few reports of the exact same symptoms when googling the issue while trying to troubleshoot it.

Previous GPU(s) worked fine in that system and it caused the same problem on another system which had windows 7 on (PC it was in had win7 also). RMA replacement worked fine without the issue while it was in my hands also. (Same card had the blackscreen issue quite badly and the replacement didn't have any of that either while I was testing it hence my previous post where I said I'm not convinced its a software issue).

That's because they're having other stability issues on their pc. You'd be surprised at the level of incompetence of people when it comes to diagnosing these things. Something goes wrong and they blame it on the graphics card whilst refusing to even acknowledge it could be something else. I'll tell you this, i know im right and i sense i won't convince you regardless but the red screen is not caused by a 290 but other system instabilities.

Like this? GTX 780 Black Screen

Ask Google and he will find it for you. ;)

Lol.

hi, ive had 2 of these cards msi and powercolor, both black screen with looping audio, the powercolor is going back on monday, but which 290 do i go for now? none reference? both cards were (are) reference. or do i say stuff it and go 780? dont really want to go that way as i was waiting for mantle. but at the same time im not happy having to rma my cards

Right, ignoring the pages of brand defending and whatever else which has happened after your question:

You can either try down clocking your memory to see if that fixes the black screen issue. You might lose a tiny bit of performance (say 0.5 FPS) but gain stability and then when Mantle arrives... Unfortunately having to RMA is part of owning a piece of hardware but in your situation I similarly wouldn't be happy.

As you're interested in Mantle however I would be tempted in your situation to persevere and RMA, demand return postage back and try again with a new card. See what happens.

I am a bit short of 1440p entries for the sleeping dogs bench, is there any chance of you guys settling your differences over a single GPU overclock shootout @1440p.:D:p:D

All in good time Kaap.

+1

Why not try an AIB 290 like the msi gamer edition?

I don't know if this helps but OCN.net ran a poll to see what the biggest cause of problems were and seems that stock clock Elpida UEFI is the biggest issue.

Might be something there that will help but I am not trawling through 39 pages of problems to look for ya :D

Why not :p

Well I am hoping I have got my 290 stable now after uping the voltage which I shouldn't have to do at stock but then OCK said there was nothing wrong with the card after 4 days benchmarking.
Yes AMD new driver fixed game problems but it would still blackscreen in windows at random and I did lots of testing eg.. 2 Different motherboard [Asus and Gigabyte] 3 PSU's, 3 OS's [7,8,8.1] and 3 different drivers [cd ones, beta one's,13.12] and it still blackscreened.

Here's hoping it stays stable now I have fiddled with it other wise its the biggest lemon I have ever paid for lol :)

Lol.

Read what I said, I was testing it myself, even pulled the card and tried it in another system that I use for testing and know is stable and was able to reproduce the exact same issue and from googling the issue there are other amd users who have similiar experiences with no problems with their old gpu and everything working fine after rmaing the card - its definitely an issue that affects some 290s even if its not a general fault with them. I suspect from the nature of it either the VRAM or vrms are getting to warm on these cards.

Just telling you what the fault is, up to you how you interpret it.

On a serious note, Elpdia went bust in August, its obvious from those charts its Elpdia IC's causing the problem, i wouldn't think it at all inconceavable that AMD may have been sold a batch of faulty IC's in whatever messy business may have been going on down there just as they were going Kaput.

As I said the source of these particular red screens does not seem to be related to the rest of the system - I find it far more likely its like humbug posted and there are some cards with vary degrees of poor quality Elpdia ICs.

I am lolling.

I wouldn't defend them to the end... at least they don't actively kill cards with poor drivers ;)

Might just be an Incompatible system. but meh

No you are right, they just send them out that way instead, no driver required ;)

From my experience there is no black screen issue, in MY experience from fitting a dozen of them...
yes i have seen that people experience this black screen issue and in the OPS case all of his have been like it... which tbh sounds like user error to me.
That's my assumption based on the situation.

Assumption is the mother of all fk ups
