Building a PC - Budget £1500-£1800

Asus boards are good, use them myself in a few of my builds. One thing to bear in mind is Gigabyte have a UK RMA address making life lots easier in the event of problems

Alright, the Gigabyte H87_HD3 board seems like a good shout. So, because connecting an Ethernet cable to the PC will be impractical, do you recommend using a network card (PCIE) or a USB wi-fi adapter?

Alright, I'm back again with an updated spec - getting closer to a final, great build now!

I am still open to suggestions of course, and will continue looking at RAID options for the hard drives - but nothing too complicated, as my dad just wants a PC which will run fast, load programs quickly and will be reliable.

Also, I am not up to date on the lower end Graphics Cards but I assume that the HD6450 Silent I chose here will be enough to possibly run multiple monitors in the future.

You could save £50 on the PSU

Review: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=348

Seems pretty good from that review, however I didn't really see much of a mention of noise - ideally, he'd like the computer to be as quiet as possible which is why I opted for that BeQuiet PSU. However, that Seasonic looks very good and if it is fairly quiet then I'll probably opt for that one instead.

I have a slightly new build idea for this system, it is X79 based - but I'm thinking it's probably a bit overkill for what he needs so I'll probably stick to a 4770 system. But here's the spec anyway:

Haswell takes dual channel ram, also here is a much better PSU but much cheaper, and a better mobo for the haswell build, incase you feel the need over clock in the future.

This is for my dad's build by the way, and he won't be overclocking (I'll be getting the 4770, non k edition, for this). He will need 32GB of RAM so just 16GB of dual channel is not an option I'm afraid.

Also, I picked that PSU because this build needs to be quiet - is that Superflower quiet (I'd imagine it probably is given the quality of Superflower units)?

A xeon build is likely not necessary for the work he will be doing, an Haswell i7 4771 will be the better option in my opinion. Not a lot of storage will be required either, as his current computer has only ~250GB used; so the 500GB EVO SSD and a 1TB HDD (for backups) are enough.

That GTX-650 could be a bit loud for this build couldn't it, that's why I opted for the low profile quadro series GPU in my spec.

Also, is there any reason why you chose 2 kits of dual channel as opposed to 1 kit of quad?

Cheers for the advice and suggestions everyone, by the way :)

The ram was meant to be 2x 16gb my bad, i picked dual channel since 1150 only supports 2 channel ram I believe, only x79 I believe offers 4 channel ram, so just get 2x 16gb. From what I have seen/heard the Superflower is really quiet and with the amount you save it is well worth it.

Ok, cheers that's very helpful; didn't realise Haswell doesn't support Quad Channel RAM. :)

Probably because it is cheaper buying 2 kits of dual channel as opposed to 1 kit of quad channel.
