Kamui Kobayashi was so eager to return to Formula 1 race action this year that he turned his back on an expanded Ferrari deal and is driving for Caterham for free.

Good to see him racing without pay, it's always struck me as a little odd teams require drivers to bring sponsorship and then pay the driver however many millions.

Caterham won't be paying him but he'll be getting plenty of personal sponsorship, canny move from him. Gets him on the grid and gives him track time in a new spec car.

Yep. Just a case of cutting costs by standardizing a part all teams make an almost identical version of anyway. Plus the FIA get to enforce a base line of safety standards too.

Interesting interview from McLaren's MD Jonathan Neale

"We won't be announcing a new title partner when we launch our new MP4-29 on January 24th," he confirms, "but our roster of sponsors remains the envy of the pitlane.

"So, bearing all the above points in mind, I'm pleased to say that McLaren Racing will have a larger operational budget available to it in 2014 than it's had in any previous season in McLaren's history.

Yep. It was going to be silver and green, but they ended up doing a deal with the makers of Grand Prix with the McLaren M2B starring as the 'Yamura' car in white with a green stripe around the nose and up to the cockpit.
