The Photography Forum - Your feedback wanted

Sh4rkie: I think it's implicit that when someone starts a thread they're expecting some critique. I'm with Alex on that regard.
I tend to agree with you but witnessed a few times when an OP has spat their dummy out when someone has critiqued their work without asking. Not here i don't think but seen it a few times. Some people do post for pure pleasure or to showcase their work rather than invite comments which is fair enough, i always er on the side of caution.

Yes I've seen this as well, it's painful to watch!

For what it's worth, I really enjoy the forum although it's pretty quiet I've learnt a lot here and had given me all sorts of inspiration. Having started beginning of last year I'm enjoying the hobby immensely and you guys have all played a part.

One thing I disagree with is separate subforums, even if the traffic tripled overnight I would rather check a single place. Sometime ago I did some research to see if there was any forum readers available, I imagine this is against OCUKs interests as the traffic here ultimately will promote their products. Absolutely nothing wrong with that if it's the case - my (rambling) point is that if there was such a reader and you could identify new/unread threads easily then it wouldn't matter if there were sub-forums or not. My advice would therefore be keep it in one place, label threads accordingly with some guidance on how to do so (with C&C, RIA, Gear Talk, Advice preceding the subject and Robert Sherunkle).

If the "themed" threads are to continue, they should be linked in the forum sticky or made sticky themselves. I'd rather they get locked but it shouldn't stop people from creating their own if they really want.

Also I would recommend trying to keep things simple, there is a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience here, you will never please everyone :) Let common sense prevail not too many rules please :)

It's nice to log on and see half a page of active threads discussing pictures and the gear threads pushed down the bottom, definitely a start worth building on.

* How-To guides.
People can post how to do things like HDR, Portraits, Composition, Lighting, Light Painting, Long exposures, Client interaction, Business, Philosophy, etc etc. A rising tide lifts all boats.
The best or most popular guides should be made stickies

Okay, I've had a bash at this:

I'm not sure the format is right, but hopefully people will get the general gist of the sort of threads that could be created? Perhaps links to these type of threads could be added to the existing sticky or a new techniques/tutorials sticky created with links to the subjects created?

Excellent effort :)

I think we may have to tidy up the sticky. Its stuff like this that should be in there. Perhaps for sale stuff needs it's own thread.

You might know how to make Coca Cola but that doesn't mean to say people will buy it or you'll get it right.

You're actually one of my fav togs on here and the wedding work you do i think (and my missus agrees so i must be right) is sublime. But for all of the quality in your processing (and it is), it's what you capture for me, that's the bit that sets you apart. Not upping your black point, playing with curves, adding grain etc. It's an ability that can not truly be taught, you have a photographers eye.

If someone knows roughly your processing it doesn't mean squat unless are as good as you capturing the scene in front of them. Polish a turd, it's still a turd ;)

I agree, I've read all sorts in different forums, sometimes very specific but at the end of the day my pictures are still rubbish.

I'm sure it was Raymond who said you can learn all you like and spend all the money you like on equipment but it's down to composition in the end, a piece of advice that has always stuck with me.

Good advice and guidance is what this forum needs.
