She is a gamer at heart, but lost touch with it. She enjoys anime and is obsessed with Japanese/Chinese stuff.

So I'm thinking maybe the PSP for the Final Fantasy games. But then I imagine the DS has the same sort of games (JRPG's)?

Help!

I'm leaning towards the DS lite, it's got better battery life (over double) than the 3DS, smaller for her purse and as far as I'm aware, just as good and large a game selection than the 3DS.

Thanks!

The 3DS is so cheap now and there are many incredible games for it. The 3DS will also play all DS games too.

Sadly, the report that the battery being pretty pants has completely ruled it out. She games on her phone quite a lot and complains about the battery being pants on that. Which lasts several hours. So it's a key point I want.

Plus, I don't think she will be overly fussed about the 3D.

Annnndddd, as we are both saving our pennies for a deposit, I can only imagine the option to buy either a £3 game or a £30 for the extra 3D will not be justifiable.

If she enjoys it a lot, then I can always upgrade it :)

You know the 3DS lasts longer when playing original DS games? I get 6.5-7 hours per charge playing DS games.

Getting the 3DS is not about the 3D, the games on it are incredible and can't be played on a DS Lite! You could get the 2DS for even less than the 3DS, and it has better battery life to boot.

Your points about saving money and buying both a DS Lite and a 3DS don't make sense...

Interesting points, I just watched a few videos and the 3DS is almost, if not identical in size to the lite, the screen is a big selling point as well.

If the battery really is that good with standard DS titles, then yea, I see no reason why it isn't eh better option.

As for your confusion about my point, read it properly. I mention I could upgrade her to the 3DS down the line, maybe a Christmas gift if she enjoys it so much? Does that clear it up?

But ultimately, I think you have a good point, the 3DS looks good, good hardware, good game selection (even if the 3D games are much more expensive), good UI and fairly quick to charge up.

It's entirely up to opinion and taste in games of course, but I'd go for the PSP or Vita for JRPGs. With the PSone backwards compatibility on both you've got access to some of the best JRPGs around (Xenogears, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy, etc.) and they look even more stunning on the Vita's OLED screen. The PSP has quite the library of JRPGs as well (some of which are available digitally on the Vita), and has some sequels/prequels to other console titles like Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (both of which are excellent games). If she's wanting a handheld for Final Fantasy I don't think you could do better than the Vita, it has Final Fantasy I-IX currently available on it, with X and X-2 HD to follow, which might then be followed by XII HD if it does well enough.

Don't get me wrong, I knew what you meant but buying twice isn't sensible :p

If 3DS games are a bit on the expensive side you might want to look into a rental service such as boomerang if she will get through a large number of games.

If she likes anime, rpgs and Japanese stuff then the 3DS has the Shin Megami Tensei games, Bravely Default and Fire Emblem and whatever DS games are out there.

But then Vita does have Persona 4 Golden though... and a lot of old PSP and PS1 games from the psn store.

Personally I'd pick Vita for the back catalogue that you have access to plus Persona 4, Disgaea series and that more rpg's and visual novel style games (very anime stylised) are coming out soon like Danganronpa.

Honestly though I enjoy both of them a lot and would feel like I am missing out on both :\, but if I was to pick one I guess it would be the Vita, but only just.

Edit: What he said ^

I can't imagine only having stuck with the one, but I think the Vita would have had the edge for me due to the backwards compatibility with PSone and PSP games, and the large quantity of quality JRPGs.

If you do get her the Vita, put some serious consideration into Persona 4 Golden.

Sadly I went for the 3ds in the end. I got on the phone to her sis and she said she would enjoy the 3ds more.

Now... What games now?

I'd say 3DS with a Nyko battery. Massive library of JRPG's. Oh I see you got one, good choice.
