Why are people so defensive about Nest?

Any relatively modern boiler and/or thermostat can do that though... I'm all for technological advancements, but this just seems like gimmickry for its own sake.

In fact, the control panel for my boiler is bloody ancient and I can set different profiles for both hot water and central heating.

All this "Hey you can turn the heating on while you're out" nonsense.

I'm out, why the hell would I want to turn the heating on? It's on a timer for when I get in, and if it's not, I can turn it on and have a warm house in 10-20 minutes.

Mine allows you to program which days of the week, what times, what temps, set profiles and it's a 12 year old thermostat that only cost about £50 back then.

Knock yourself out :) we sell numerous energy efficient Danish products, as well as circuits for under floor heating, fan coils, and radiator circuits, but the whole company has an ethos of genuinely trying to make sure that people in England are reducing their carbon emissions and saving money on energy bills. In Denmark energy bills cost about 300% as much as they do here, so it's no wonder they made everything so efficient!!

Very cool. Do you do domestic stuff too or is this aimed at industry?

It's aimed at industry really, so Highbury Stadium was converted to flats. We provided our "FlatStations" which are an interface between flats and district heating schemes, and I think we may have provided a CHP or two (maybe not). Most of our stuff tends to go into flats and offices.

In domestic terms, if you don't have a flat in a district heating scheme, the chances are that you won't be able to use our products.

I really hope that some peoples OH don't use this as prove of where their GF's/Husbands have been. Apparently I've been to Manchester and Buenos Aries in the last month! I'd love to remember my Buenos Aries trip!

Sounds like your account has been hacked by someone in Buenos Aries!

If you don't want to use it, DON'T USE IT. It's great for us lazy people.

Cold in the house but lovely and warm in your bed? Got your phone handy? Sorted! Want the house to be warm for when you arrive home from a hard day working outside in the rain? Got your phone handy? Sorted!

It seems that every article I read about the Nest thermostat is about how you're inviting Google into your home; 'spy in the nest' seems to be coined about a fair bit. But as far as I can see the only extra information they have is how warm I like to keep my house? Am I missing something?

Google already know pretty much everything about everyone including that we all like to visit this website thanks to Overclockers using Google Analytics. They know when I am at work or at home thanks to my phone. Is knowing the temperature of your home really one step too far? Or are people scared Google can work out that my home could do with an extra layer of insulation and will start showing me adverts for rolls of the stuff? Where is the line? Google is pretty much embedded in all our lives whether we like it or not so is the line just Google and we are protesting for protesting sake without any agenda? Do you prefer Google collecting data on everyone or the NSA? As it is no shock to any of us that Google collect data on you but it was that NSA and GCHQ does?

Oh right, because Google already collect vast amounts of information about me and have a ton of cash so I can't stop it, I should be happy and not complain.

Who really cares? If someone somewhere you don't know, knows that you like shopping on some really weird sites. That you often visit your local Ann Summers. Maybe they even know you like taking A COLD SHOWER!!! Shock horror.

If that was ever to get leaked out, sue them and enjoy the free money.

If it comes to the point where Google knows so much about me that every friday I buy a curry from the local takeaway. I'd be quite happy to receive an email telling me that the indian a few meters down the next road are doing 50% off.

They make money selling ads. I don't HAVE to buy stuff off those ads, but if it's targeted based on info my devices send, and ends up saving me money I'm all for it

Maybe I am being naive, but if we want the house of the future (lets me honest, we all did in the 80s/90s) then we can't without having our data mined

To be honest, I'm really not that interesting! so drop the ego and enjoy the tech....don't like it, don't use it

If google knows when I take a dump, wipe my backside, and how much loo roll I use then fantastic. Every weekend I'll have a custom made shopping list telling me to go to either Tesco, Asdas or Sainsburys as that's the cheapest place for me. If asda pays google x amount for it, then I really REALLY don't care IF I am saving money.

p.s. oh, and I want to buy a nest..any gadget that talks is awesome lol

Google are sitting on a tone of money so they made an investment towards diversifying their business. Also, Google don't know that much about us, at least not like the Goverments do, you're exaggerating. Google only knows Joe Doe likes overclockers so they will probably show him some PC hardware ads but they don't know who Joe Doe actually is.

They just know where he works, lives and other places he frequents, what he looks like, who he emails and socialises with online, what sites he is browsing.... The list goes on...

Could be quite cool where you walk from one room to another and the rads in that room then switch on, when you leave one room, the rads switch off. When I say switch on, I mean move the temp from a low heat to keep the room not ice cold but warm enough to not be freezing so you can stay in there whilst the rad then warms it up to your selected temp.

Plus, location services seeing that you are driving home on your usual commute home and getting the house nice and warm before you rock up.

Sounds cool to me.

Got an early meeting in the morning, no problem, your central heating will see you have an appointment early and will get the hot water on so you can have that early shower. Bingo.

or detect you've entered the toilet and automatically book a call with the local plumber

The problem comes when I don't get a choice.

How am I going to stop a Google Glass wearer recording my image?

What does that matter? I'd feel quite loved if someone really wanted to create a shrine of pictures/videos of me.

It's not like you berate someone when you catch them looking at you on the train etc...! "Don't you dare look at me in public!!!!" lol.

Think about it this way

The government gets a tip off that their is a terrorist planning a bomb attack in London. They activate the location services of every google glass wearer in London.

Instantly they have thousands of cctv cameras
