PS4, to standby or not to standby?

Always on stand by, mainly because I can remote play on my Vita from around the house. Plus it's available to download any purchases and grab updates if required (slow connection here too)

I doubt that standby mode and it being off are any different tbh in the stress level of going from either of those to full power.

Even when it is "off" you can still turn it on using a DS4 from the other side of the room, so it is actually in standby just in a lower state of it.

So it is Standby, Standby with update and charging on, the only time it is truly off is when you plus the plug out or turn the switch off at the socket.

Hmm, I may have misunderstood this thread! lol

I assumed 'standby' meant pressing the pad button and then selecting the option 'turn off'.

When people were saying they turn it off, I assumed that meant by the plug at the wall.
I thought standby just referred to it being off, but can be turned out remotely hence 'standby...'

Never really looked at the different levels of it

Because I usually sit down to play a specific game, not play something else while the game I want to play updates and then eventually get round to playing it. Besides, for those of us on slower internet connections (unthinkable, I know) current update sizes can mean a fairly long download time. If there are ways around that, it makes sense to use them.

Yeah that's why I preferred the old method of checking once per day for updates. Having it in a special standby mode 24/7 in case an update comes out seems wasteful atm, when I have more games or a vita, it will obviously be the preferred option.

I also have a slow connection 10MB atm, used to have 120MB and hopefully be back on that when the current contract expires.

Standby, but I turned off the option to "Power USB" in standby because there seems to be a bug whereby if that is enabled, the fans still whirl (albeit it quietly) in standby mode.

aha, I was about to say I used to leave mine in standby but now I turn it off because of the fan, if that cures it I will go back to leaving it in standby.

Does it not lose its date\time settings if its powered off completely? I'm sure the 360 used to :o But I'm getting old, memory could be cloudy :D

I suppose there should be some kind of sync going on with an internet connection
The Xbox 360 does indeed lose it's settings unless it's connected to Live. Don't think the PS4 has the same problem although to be honest mine has never been disconnected while in use.

no standby as theres been plenty of times where i have woke the thing up from standy only for it to start downloading a update

The fan stays on in standby when it's doing something such as downloading. Not noticed it staying on when it's just charging the controller though.

Will probably use it a lot more when you can suspend and resume games from standby. Hopefully that's in the next firmware.

I always turn mine off, maybe I'm just tight but I don't like the thought of wasted electricity from it being in standby even if it's just a tiny amount.

Turn it off using the DS4 (not at the wall) so it is still in a kind of inactive standby. I only use it once or twice per week and don't remote play so standby makes no sense.

Saving the planet one watt at a time ;)

Unless you're using super-efficient heating and LED lights throughout your house, the amount saved by turning stuff off is completely insignificant.

But like anything, if everyone does it it adds up, e.g. if all 2,000 people in my office building would actually turn off their monitors at night that's 2kW/h saved.

I've had that happen a few times and they've actually woken me up. The noise they make is very high pitched and quite annoying so I just turn off my PS4 now.
