20-30k a year, £5k budget

I've not specifically recommend Mk2's, I merely linked to that high miler because of the comedy value but unfortunately there seems to be a major migration of Woosh Parrots to these here shores. The vast majority on Autotrader in that price range are Mk1's so I presume no one has actually bothered to look. :p

I'm going to throw this one out there but I've donned my flame suit....

Peugeot 407 Coupe 2.7 TDI GT

I actually quite like these! Not as pretty as the 406 Coupe but still.

*Also dons flame suit*

Edit: Nitpicking, but it's an HDI rather than TDI ;)

wat, have you even checked AutoTrader?

Also what's the gig, travelling to a single place or work or are you on the road?

Yes, and none of the Mk1 ones that I have found close by have struck me as a particularly nice example.

Single place 95% of the time, 80 miles a day currently, possibly going up to 170.

170 a day with a 48 week working year is about 40k, to be frank maybe you should up your budget a bit to something newer with the prospect of a warranty and courtesy car should something happen?

Chris how the hell do you get 180 miles on half a tank in your Evo, I struggle to get 150 miles on a full tank in mine and that's driving carefully, perhaps i've been sold a duff one... let me know your secret !

:)

Skoda appeals more than a Mondeo. But I think Superbs are out of my budget sadly. I want something very reliable, if it has to go into the garage then I have to take my Evo and if I work in Hampshire that's a 180 mile round trip and over half a tank of Super gone. :D

Something like this

The seats are really comfortable especially in leather though I doubt you will find a Highline trim with leather at that price.

Edit: if slightly higher miles is ok

Bear in mind that 170hp diesels have a DPF which fails at around 70k on some cars and will cost you £800 to fix unless you have a straight pipe welded in its place (you can get bolt on ones too for MOT purposes) and have the DPF (and EGR whilst you're at it) mapped out either with or without a proper remap.

At 170 miles a day the fuel cost alone makes staying there during the week look attractive

Yeah I have thought about this but it's a 1h30 trip each way and I'm currently travelling 1h15 or so as I'm currently on b roads.

It's an Evo 9, they will do 250 miles + with a steady right foot.

As I said, it's only a possibility, current mileage is 80 miles a day and will be fore the foreseeable future. Yes I have thought about maybe leasing something.

The cost to lease anything even remotely tolerable with a 40kpa allowance would be eye watering tbh. In that situation you'd be better buying a new (year or so old) 20-30k mile car every year or two. Retain the nice warranty cover, lose the initial horrible depreciation - though you'd seriously devalue the car anyway

Hmm good point.
