Logmein free no longer 'free'

I am in your shoes as I've used the free version for about 10 years but it really is as simple as pay up for a service you obviously get a lot of value from or move to another free service.
They're not running a charity.

I never said they were. However, their handling of this situation leaves much to be desired. If they had given a month's notice and offered a reasonable pricing plan then I think they wouldn't have annoyed as many as they have by doing what they've done now. I have 5 computers that I occasionally access. Paying out over £100 per year just for that facility makes no sense whatsoever. Add to that my value as someone that uses their other products, and has recommended them to a lot of people that I deal with, it makes this all the more annoying for me.

So if you were in our boat, what would you do? Pay up because they've just held a loaded gun to your head and forced you to do so to continue to use their service, or move somewhere else? It's easy to make comments on a situation that you're not affected by, but what if you tried putting yourself in our shoes?

Yep I would pay OR move to another service. They don't have a gun to your head they are simply saying if you want to use our service again then we are now a paid service if not you must move somewhere else.

It's business.

PS I am in your shoes...... I do run this on a free service and now I'm seeking alternatives. I already have my solution what about you?

Did you not read my post before you posted up your comment of "Too late, it's either pay or move to another service."? I said in there that I've switched to TeamViewer.

What's wrong with the standard Remote Desktop? Why the need for Logmein and Teamviewer?

Most people use these services to support family and friends, without needing to configure their router to forward TCP 3389 to the PC in question (and they may have more than one they want supporting on!)

Logmein proxies these connections via outbound connections initiated from the targets end to the Logmein servers, so no router config is necessary.

Think I might look into Remote Assistance instead, think it is better than it was.

But if your a LogMeIn Central customer, nothing to worry about..:)
This for me. Work have paid for me to have logmein central for quite a while now, as well as the app so I can remote over iphone 3g.
On January 21st we announced the elimination of LogMeIn Free. As a Central customer you are NOT impacted by this change. You can continue to deploy free hosts and purchase host-level subscriptions of LogMeIn Pro. Access to computers in your account will not be interrupted for your secondary users.

Great product, its a shame its happened so quickly but I will continue to be a user and all but one of my computers I have access to are using the free client.

Discovered this when I was at work, was helping a guy out with an email problem and noticed LogMeIn and automatically installed its new client for paying customers (which has a very poor UI at the moment). We're sticking with Central until the non-web based client doesn't suck so much.

You could manage hundreds of machines from your login and didn't need to know the IP address to connect (or have to use DNS etc). Quite handy tool really.

Annoyed, only 2 months back I decided to support them a bit and paid for Ignition on Android (could have got a cracked version but I have been a happy user of free for many years and wanted to do the right thing) now I have to shell out $50 a year for a whole bunch of features I don't need. :(

At least I get 6 months free pro for being a long time user, but I doubt I'll stick around after that.

It's a shame that they couldn't continue the free service and just discontinue support/upgrades but it is what it is. I'll probably move to teamviewer.

I've been a long term user of LMI and Teamviewer, and have to admit I normally use LMI over Teamviewer. The extra features given in LMI pro don't really warrant paying for the service. As someone suggested above, if they did the basic level of service for $5/$10 per device per year then I think more would be inclined to take up the offer. I almost purchased the app for android as well, glad I didn't as that would have been a waste.
