Eagle Dynamics - A stain on the underpants of gaming

They're not bundling anything on top of Steam. Steam is just a sales platform and delivery method, Steam DRM isn't used at all.

Which games do use "Steam DRM"?

Does Steam DRM support 64 bit software yet?

Yes.

This isn't a pop at ED but I'd be interested to know why any developer/publisher decides to bundle DRM on top of Steam these days.

Doesn't that just alienate the customer? It certainly puts me off buying.

Exactly.

AFAIK, there are no ED employees moderating that forum - it has nothing to do with ED.

That said would you still like some answers?

Nate

Nate, if you could please find out whom dropped the ban hammer, that would be a start.

If it was not one of these guys:
http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/moderators

Then it is my understanding it was someone given privileges by ED for their discussion group.

Thank you.

Terraria, game refuses to launch unless you have Steam running and own the game on the account logged in, and it doesn't use Steamworks, so that's a form of DRM. Most games have this basic check.

I've no way of finding out about the moderation on the Steam forum sorry. No employee of ED Moderates on Steam. If you got banned it wasn't by ED - they just don't get involved with 3rd party forums at all.

That said, when I asked if you still wanted answers - I meant about the game, sorry I should have been clearer.. I try not to get involved with moderating, it's like herding cats, only less fun.

Nate

I know Matt he is the Producer for ED, no idea about Fearlessfrog. AFAIK Matt doesn't participate in that forum much, if at all, and he certainly does not moderate it. Sorry to say Gimpy but your anger here is misdirected.

That said, if you have any questions you need answered about the game I am more than happy to help.

How exactly do you know he doesn't? (rhetorical) For all OP knows, I know, you know, he saw his comment, didn't like it, so he deleted it.

I know him, and I know he rarely participates directly with customers any more, only then it is only on their own forums. And he doesn't moderate there either.

I can't prove any of that to you, and I'm not going to try to convince you of it either.

At a guess, I would imagine that StarForce was the original protection on the DVD and pre-Steam download version of the game. Steam DRM was added onto this when the Steam release was confirmed but StarForce was not removed. Nate may be able to confirm why, but in my experience it's usually due to either time or cost pressures.

Over the years DCS since I bought Black Shark I have had maybe 6 Windows corruptions due to software or hardware problems. Another bunch of licenses lost because I didn't uninstall the software prior to upgrading my Windows from XP, to Windows Vista 32, to Vista 64 to Windows 7.

I pointed out that I had used up all my activations on BS1 because of the above reasons and was told that 10 activations should be more than enough to last anyone a lifetime.

Not to mention the fact that it runs like crap on AMD GPUs due to developer incompetence. They constantly argue that AMD have removed ALL DX9 optimisations since driver 12.xx. Somehow other DX9 sims run perfectly fine.

FSX
Rise of Flight
Steel Fury

I gave up supporting this crowd of clowns a long time ago.

Forgot to say in my last post. StarForce is a pain in the ass and I hate it. If you hit any problems with it then it's a real pig to fix. Luckily, it seems to be dieing out now. Hopefully because developers and publishers are realising how much trouble it can cause for genuine purchasers of the game.

Not quite, the steam version and the version from the ED shop are virtually identical. The DRM is the same in both versions. The use of the DRM allows them to sell from their own shop too, with content protection. It isn't a left over Disk based DRM, AFAIK DCS never used Disc based DRM, Lock On did however.

Thanks Nate. I understand the reasoning. I don't know how StarForce is implemented, but would it create quite a different code branch to maintain separately if it was stripped out of one version? Or is it difficult to justify the time to remove it?

ED are a terrible company, all the testers and mods don't provide poor feedback to ED else they get banned from their ivory towers.

They will not allow any kind of talk of bad/poor performance or accept that they could improve their products, they simply ban you.

I don't buy any ED products at full price because of it, sadly there is no competition at all in the genre so they act like animals.

I hope someone competes against them and they go under tbh.

Fan moderated mate, not company.

Doh. Im surprised the company allow it tbh, it seems to be building up a reputation, and not a good one, and companies are usually so careful about their brand.

Exactly, the forum is hosted on the ED servers and is as such endorsed by them. Ergo, it's ED's will that is enforced there.

The mods keep stating DCS runs like crap on AMD GPUs because AMD removed ALL DX9 optimisations. I pointed out that other DX9 games run perfectly fine on AMD GPUs it the response was *yeah those are AAA titles". I listed a whole bunch of DX9 non AAA games that run perfectly fine and it was ignored.

Skyrim
Witcher 2
FSX
Rise of Flight
Divinity Eco Draconis
Cliff of Dover on DX9

All of these games run perfectly fine and in fact are as fast or faster than Nvidia equivalent GPUs. I hate when lazy, incompetent developers refuse to fix their poor code and instead blame a hardware vendor.

I got banned from their forums once and I still don't know why. I complained on SimHQ about it and then I was miraculously unbanned. I owe a debt of gratitude to whoever unbanned me, and a debt of fury to whoever did ban me.

Save your money, don't buy it at all. FC3 still uses the very ancient graphics engine circa 1999. They are building a new map of Nevada using the new EDGE graphical engine. You will need to pay for it when it is released. Of course wars are fought in Nevad all the time.

Go purchase Rise of Flight which is free to play and you get a flyable Spad13 and Albatros D.Va. Additional planes will cost you a few dollars.

Or Battle of Stalingrad though this is only in early Alpha.
